Friday’s Highlights : Bishop Amat’s Bieniemy Is Injured in 21-0 Victory

La Puente Bishop Amat, The Times’ No. 3-ranked Southern Section team, defeated La Canada St. Francis, 21-0, Friday night in a nonleague game at Bishop Amat, but the victory could prove to be costly.

Junior running back Eric Bieniemy, who averaged over 200 yards per game in the Lancers’ first three contests, gained 57 yards in 16 carries against the Golden Knights, but he was forced to leave the game early in the second half with a hip-pointer injury.

Quarterback Rick Carter picked up the offense for the Lancers, completing 15 of 23 passes for 214 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Bieniemy’s replacement, Lee Barrett, rushed for 83 yards in 16 carries and scored once.

Bishop Amat had 339 yards in total offense and limited St. Francis to just 63 yards.

Bishop Amat is now 4-0 and St. Francis is 1-3.

City Locke 54, LA Jordan 10--Andrew Thompson rushed for 143 yards in 12 carries and scored on runs of 26 and 44 yards, while teammate Darrin Hagen, a sophomore, gained 134 yards in 14 tries to lead the Saints to victory in the “Watts Super Bowl” at Jordan. Locke quarterback Leon Otis completed 11 of 16 for 235 yards and 1 touchdown in the nonleague game. The Saint senior also had two touchdowns rushing. Defensively, Locke linebacker Ian Waite had nine tackles (three unassisted) and Rickey Collins and Paul Christian each had one interception. Locke is now 1-2 and Jordan is 0-3.

Southern Section Santa Fe Springs St. Paul 22, Huntington Beach Ocean View 0--Junior tailback Armondo Costello scored two touchdowns, one on an 81-yard run from scrimmage, the second longest in the Santa Fe school’s history, to insure St. Paul its fourth win in four games. Quarterback John Scott completed 10 of 17 for 150 yards in the nonleague game at St. Paul. The Swordsman limited the Sea Hawks to just 18 yards passing and 140 yards rushing. Ocean View (1-3) was led by Marc Ohm, who gained 96 yards in 23 carries.

Riverside Poly 14, Redlands 0--Back Chris Brantley rushed for 98 yards and was on the receiving end of a 74-yard touchdown pass play from quarterback Bruce Campbell as the Bears, The Times’ No. 4-ranked team, opened Citrus Belt league play at U. Riverside. Campbell completed 6 of 10 for 136 yards. Riverside Poly is now 4-0.

Canon Country Canyon 21, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 14--the Cowboys improved their winning streak to 28, but it wasn’t easy. After being down 7-0 in the first quarter, they got second-quarter touchdown runs by quarterack John Watkins an tailback Lance Cross to take a 14-7 lead at halftime. Watkins completed 13 of 21 for 178 yards and also gained 71 yards in 15 carries in the non league game at Canyon. The Cowboys are now 4-0 and Notre Dame is 1-3.

Oxnard Rio Mesa 13, Oxnard 3--Aaron Nordquist caught a 23-yard touchdown pass from Steve Carolan in the third quarter, and John Northcutt returned an interception 26 yards for a second touchdown as the resurging Spartans upset the Yellowjackets, the No. 2-ranked team in the Coastal Conference, at Rio Mesa. It was the Channel League opener for both teams. Carolan completed 9 of 13 for 118 yards. Rio Mesa, a 2-8 team in 1984, is now 3-0-1. Oxnard is 3-1.
