Toreros Win Second Straight by Defeating Claremont-Mudd

The University of San Diego limited Claremont-Mudd to 109 yards Saturday and beat the Stags, 8-7, in a nonconference football game at Claremont.

The win was the second straight for the Toreros, who are 2-2. Claremont-Mudd is 0-3.

Claremont-Mudd took a 7-2 lead with 2:17 left in the first half when Chris Dabrow capped an 80-yard drive with a 6-yard touchdown run. USD had scored first at the two-minute mark of the second quarter on a safety when linebacker Jeff Merlino tackled Stagg quarterback Scott Kennedy in the end zone.

USD regained the lead with 2:45 remaining in the third quarter. Running back Roger Cloutier, seeing his first action of the season, scored on a 7-yard run. The Toreros missed the extra-point attempt and the score remained 8-7.

The Stags were unable to mount a serious scoring threat the remainder of the game. USD defensive back Jim Gutsmidle intercepted backup quarterback Steve Olson’s pass on the Claremont-Mudd 33-yard line with 25 seconds left to insure the Toreros’ win.
