Southland Roundup : Soto Scores 4 Touchdowns to Lead Redlands

Senior tailback Ed Soto rushed for 200 yards and 4 touchdowns to lead Redlands to 34-14 victory over Claremont-Mudd Saturday in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Claremont.

Soto, who had 27 carries, scored on runs of 1, 13, 16 and 13 yards. He also had a 66-yard run in the second quarter which set up quarterback Jamie Garton’s six-yard touchdown pass to John German, and had a 67-yard kickoff return in the third quarter.

Claremont-Mudd’s touchdowns came in the third quarter. Jeff Ross scored on a one-yard run and running back Chris Dabrow, on a flea-flicker, connected with quarterback Steve Olsen on a 53-yard touchdown pass play.

Redlands is now 2-4 overall and 1-1 in the SCIAC. Claremont-Mudd is 0-5 and 0-2.

Cal Poly SLO 44, St. Mary’s 0--Senior Jim Gleed had 101 yards in 20 carries and scored three touchdowns, and Paulo Pueliu added 44 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead Cal Poly San Luis Obispo over St. Mary’s of Moraga in a nonconference game at San Luis Obispo.

The Mustangs (2-4) finished with 243 yards rushing, while limiting the Gaels (0-6) to 187 total yards.

CS Northridge 27, Cal Lutheran 23--Richard Brown, who replaced Mike Kane early in the second quarter after Kane sprained an ankle, rushed for 98 yards in 21 carries and scored two second-half touchdowns to lead the Matadors, 4-2 overall, in a Western State Conference opener for both teams at Northridge.

Kane, before being injured, scored his 11th touchdown of the season and his 68th point, both equaling school records.

Cal Lutheran, also 4-2, played most of the game without injured quarterback Tom Bonds, who saw action only on the final two series.

Cal Lutheran backup Vic Wilson completed 15 of 38 passes for 275 yards and 3 touchdowns, with no interceptions. Two of Wilson’s touchdown passes covered 80 yards.

Northridge quarterback completed 23 of 40 passes for 259 yards and 2 touchdowns.

U. San Diego 21, La Verne 17--Junior Roger Cloutier ran for a three-yard touchdown with 36 seconds left to give U. San Diego a victory over La Verne in a nonconference game at San Diego. Cloutier finished with 140 yards in 29 carries.

Trailing 17-14 with a minute remaining, Toreros took over at the La Verne 47. Quarterback Pat Dixon hit Jeff Mansukhani with a 40-yard pass to put the ball at the seven, and after a holding penalty put them back to the 17, Dixon hit Lionel DeMorst with a 14-yard pass to set up the final score.

San Diego is 3-3, La Verne is 2-3.
