Top Three Teams Remain Unbeaten

Two of the three unbeaten teams in The Times Valley Top 10 rolled to shutout victories over the weekend, while the third barely managed to keep its record perfect.

Third-ranked Alemany held on to defeat Crespi, 10-7, in a Del Rey League game. The Indians scored all 10 points in the first half, while the Celts, who dropped to No. 9 from the seventh position in the poll, staged a comeback in the fourth quarter that literally fell short--twice.

Just after scoring a touchdown, Crespi attempted a field goal with five minutes left, but Peter Zenobi’s try from 48 yards didn’t have the distance. With time running out, Zenobi tried a 52-yard field goal, but, again, the attempt was short.

Top-ranked Canyon, its winning streak boosted to 30 games, scored two first-half touchdowns and went on to defeat Golden League opponent Palmdale, 14-0. Granada Hills, ranked No. 2, shut out El Camino Real, 27-0.

Thousand Oaks moved up from the fifth spot to No. 4. The Lancers, who trailed Newbury Park, 14-7, with less than a minute to play, scored a touchdown and a game-winning two-point conversion with 22 seconds left. Despite the loss, the Panthers re-entered the Top 10 at No. 10.

Fifth-ranked San Fernando beat Kennedy, 21-7. Simi Valley, led by Player of the Week running back M. J. Nelson, moved to No. 6 after downing Camarillo, 28-14.

Westlake defeated Santa Monica, 47-21, and jumped to the No. 7 position. Canoga Park moved from the 10th spot to No. 8 on the strength of its 28-0 win over Sunset League rival Monroe.

Taft, which had been ranked No. 4, fell out of the Top 10 after being upset by Chatsworth, 17-12.
