San Diego Community College Roundup : Sixth-Ranked Southwestern Stops Orange Coast

Southwestern College entered Saturday night’s game against Orange Coast as the sixth-ranked junior college team in the Southland. And the Apaches did nothing to hurt their standing, winning their fourth Mission Conference game in five tries, downing the Pirates, 17-7, at LeBard Stadium in Costa Mesa.
Quarterbacks Brad Platt and Rodney Hill threw one touchdown pass apiece to pace the victory. Platt threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Willie McCloud in the first quarter for the game’s first touchdown. Hill’s pass--his first and only attempt--went to Guy Liggins in the second quarter and was good for a four-yard score. Tyler Ackerson added a 23-yard field goal for Southwestern.
Platt was intercepted three times, but completed 18 of 26 passes for 260 yards, Chris Mendenhall had two-yard in the fourth quarter for OCC (1-3, 1-4-1). Southwestern is 6-1 overall.
In other Mission Conference action:
Riverside 35, San Diego City 0--At Riverside, Clark Brown ran for two touchdowns and quarterback Keith Widner passed for two more, enabling Riverside (3-1, 4-2) to beat the Knights (0-4, 0-6) easily. Brown rushed for 145 yards on 13 carries, with Widner completing 7 of 12 passes for 150 yards.
Saddleback 43, Mesa 8--Saddleback won its seventh straight game without a loss and improved its conference record to 5-0. Roger Flicking had touchdown runs of one, four and two yards, and Bret Mersola scored from one and seven yards out. Mesa (2-3, 3-4), which had five turnovers, got a 13-yard touchdown run from Huborth Dailey in the fourth quarter.
