FALL SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS : CSUN Women Runners 2nd in Regionals

Cal State Northridge’s womens team finished second behind Cal Poly at the NCAA Division II West Regional cross-country championships at Rocklin, Calif., Saturday and qualified for the national championships.

CSUN runners Alexandra Aquirre and Nancy Bowman finished fourth and fifth in the 5,000 meters. Other CSUN women included: Heather Brookes, who finished 16th, Tammy McCarty, 25th, Margaret Barlog, 27th, Kim Stertom, 36th, and Anne Johnson, 57th.

Bente Moe of Seattle Pacific won the event in 16:59.3. Cal Poly SLO’s Lori Lopez and Jeni Dunn finished second and third.

The Calabasas High girls volleyball team advanced to the quarterfinals of the Southern Section 2-A playoffs with a 15-11, 15-7, 10-15, 15-9 second-round victory over Arroyo at Arroyo.

Tracey Gonzales led the Coyotes (10-3 overall) with 18 kills and 13 digs. Senior Lynn Goldstein had nine kills and nine digs.

Calabasas will next play Tuesday night.

Royal High needed just three games to advance to the 2-A volleyball quarterfinals.

The Highlanders, playing on the road, defeated Anaheim, 15-13, 15-9, 15-10.

Cindy Havens of Royal collected eight points and three aces. Brenda Anderson had six points and two aces. Sara Toring added nine kills for the Highlanders (14-2 overall).

“We were a little nervous at the beginning, playing in a foreign gym,” Royal Coach Bob Ferguson said. “But I’m pleased we’ve come out of the second round.”

The Royal High water polo team’s season came to an end when the Highlanders were ousted in the second round of Southern Section 3-A playoffs by Mira Costa, 9-7, at Santa Monica High.

Royal, which finished the season at 17-5, got two goals from Rob Toring. Goalie Todd Jacobson stopped nine shots, but it wasn’t enough for the Highlanders, whose top player, Dain Hurt, was shut out.

“We just didn’t play a very good game,” Royal Coach Steve Snyder said. Mira Costa advanced to the quarterfinals.
