Pacific 10 Roundup : Cal Defeats Washington in Final Two Seconds

Junior guard Kevin Johnson made two free throws with two seconds left to boost California to a 62-60 victory over Washington in a Pacific 10 Conference opener Thursday night at Berkeley.

With 10 seconds to play, Johnson helped the Golden Bears pull into a 60-60 tie when he passed the ball to Dave Butler, who laid it in.

On the next play, Cal’s Richard Chang stole the ball and passed to Johnson, who was lobbered as he was going for a layup.

Johnson had 19 points to lead all scorers.

Cal made 22 of 30 free throws while Washington made 8 of 13.

Seven-foot junior center Chris Welp scored 18 points to lead the Huskies, who dropped to 6-7 overall. Butler and Leonard Taylor each added 10 points for Cal, which improved its record to 8-2.

Stanford 84, Washington State 67--Freshman forward Todd Lichti scored 17 points, and Novian Whitsitt added 16 to lead the Cardinal to victory over the visiting Cougars.

Stanford, in front the entire game, took a 41-37 halftime lead, paced by Lichti with 10 points. Then Whitsitt scored six points during a key 18-6 Cardinal scoring spree in the second half that clinched the win.

Stanford had a 53-50 lead over the Cougars with 12 minutes remaining when Whitsitt, Lichti and Earl Koberlein sparked the offense to a 71-56 lead with 3:30 left.

Guard Keith Morrison led Washington State with 17 points, and Chris Winkler and Brian Quinnett each added 12. The Cougars made 5 of 7 free throws in the game, while Stanford hit 26 of 35.

Koberlein finished with 15 points for Stanford, which is 7-6 overall. The Cougars fell to 7-7.
