San Diego Roundup : La Jolla Tournament Will Begin Today

Four men’s and four women’s teams are at UC San Diego today for the third Michelob/Avia La Jolla Basketball Tournament at Triton Pavilion. Four games will be played today and four Saturday.

The men’s and women’s teams from UCSD and College of Notre Dame will participate. Also playing are the women’s teams from Claremont College and Smith College (Massachusetts) and the men’s squads from Pomona Pitzer and Grand Canyon College.

In the women’s division, Notre Dame meets Claremont today at 2 p.m., followed by UCSD and Smith at 4. In the men’s division, Grand Canyon faces Pomona Pitzer at 6 p.m. and UCSD meets Notre Dame at 8. The women’s championship game is Saturday at 6 p.m., followed by the men’s title game at 8.

The Bounce Style Rhythmic Gymnastics Tour, featuring two members of the U.S. rhythmic gymnastics team that competed in the 1984 Olympics, will be this weekend at Plaza Bonita shopping center. Demonstrations will be Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m., 2:30 and 4.

Taking part in the event will be Valerie Zimring, who finished 14th at the 1984 Games, and Lydia Bree, also a member of the Olympic squad. U.S. national team member Stacy Oversier will participate as well.

The 30-minute shows will include demonstrations of rhythmic gymnastics, audience participation and a question-and-answer session. San Diego is the 10th stop on the 12-city tour.

The 19th annual Wildcat Coaching clinic, featuring high school football coaches from throughout Southern California, will be Saturday at El Camino High School. Registration will start at 7:45 a.m., with the first clinic session at 8:50.

Among the coaches scheduled to instruct are Dick Haines of San Diego Section 3-A champion Vista, Skip Coons of San Diego Section 2-A champion Lincoln and Herb Meyer of host El Camino.
