Women’s Basketball Roundup : Fullerton Rallies to Stun SDSU, 71-70

Wendy Anae scored 19 points and Robin Holmes added 18 to lead the Cal State Fullerton women’s basketball team to a 71-70 upset over San Diego State Friday night in Titan Gym.

Fullerton rallied from a 10-point deficit with 7 1/2 minutes remaining to take a 69-68 lead with 1:23 left on a driving jump shot by Anae. A basket by Holmes gave the Titans a three-point advantage with 15 seconds remaining before San Diego State’s Jessica Haynes hit a concession basket at the buzzer.

The victory was only the third of the year for Fullerton, which improved its overall record to 3-9 and its Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. mark to 2-1. The Aztecs, ranked 13th nationally in a preseason poll, dropped to 6-6 and 0-1 despite 25 points and 10 rebounds from Shelda Arceneaux.

Fullerton will play host to Stanford tonight at 7:30.

In other Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. action:

UC Irvine 58, Pepperdine 54--Nadia Burks scored 25 points in the nonconference game at Crawford Hall as the Anteaters improved their record to 7-5. Natalie Crawford added 13 points, 16 rebounds and 5 blocked shots for Irvine. The Waves, who fell to 2-11, were led by Maureen Formico, who had 16 points.

In South Coast Conference action:

Mt. San Antonio 68, Rancho Santiago 54--Jeanette Smith led the Mounties (2-2, 8-7) with 30 points, Denna Molverhill added 17 points and 23 rebounds and Hazel Laurence scored 13. Leah Palmer paced the Dons (0-3, 8-7) with 15 points, Holly Wood had 14 and Connie Abrams added 13.

Fullerton 68, Cypress 61--Cypress led 33-31 at halftime but Fullerton took control early in the second half. Sandy Cotton led Fullerton (4-0, 16-4) with 18 points and Rochell Seabrook had 12 points and 14 rebounds. Cheryl Hoffman led Cypress (0-3, 5-9) with 18 points.

Orange Coast 75, Saddleback 63--Melissa Fejdasz scored 20 points to lead the Pirates (2-1, 13-4) past the Gauchos at Orange Coast. Connie Waikle scored a game-high 28 points to pace Saddleback (3-1, 12-6), which suffered its first SCC loss. Judy Calkins came off the bench to lead Orange Coast with seven assists.
