Scoring Records Go Off Chart at Loyola : Lions Rout USIU, 151-107; Smith Gets 36, McKenzie 25, Yoest 23

In a game that rendered the 45-second shot clock useless, Loyola Marymount University broke nearly every school scoring record in beating U.S. International University, 151-107, Saturday night before a crowd of 925 at Gersten Pavilion.

The game was played at such a frantic pace that Loyola broke its record for points in a half with 70 in the first half, then broke that with 81 in the second half. The 151 points shattered the school record of 122 set last month against UC Irvine. The Lions’ 60 field goals also topped the 50 they made against Irvine.

The Lions made 60 of 93 shots, a .649 percentage. They grabbed 57 rebounds.

The victory in its last nonconference game gave Loyola an 8-6 record. USIU, which had its second-best scoring effort of the season, fell to 7-8. It was the sixth time the Gulls have allowed more than 100 points.

Four players tied or broke their own scoring records. Loyola senior Keith Smith tied his career best with 36 points and moved into second place on the Loyola career list behind teammate Forrest McKenzie, who had 25 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. Smith, who hit 12 of 18 shots and added 9 assists, has 1,716 career points, 9 better than Jim Haderlein.

Additionally, sophomore forward Mike Yoest had a personal best of 23 points on 9-of-11 shooting, and junior reserve guard Dennis Vogel had 14 points in 14 minutes on 6 of 7, the second game in a row in which he has set a personal record and scored at least a point a minute.

Sophomore forward Mark Armstrong didn’t set any records but he had 11 points and 16 rebounds.

USIU scoring leader Joe Yezbak, who came into the game ranking among the nation’s scoring leaders with a 26.7 average, had a career-high 42 points on 18-of-35 shooting. Forward Charles Redding added 22 points.

USIU led briefly, 12-10, before the track meet really started. Loyola led, 70-58, at halftime, with Smith scoring 24 and Yezbak 20. Smith’s three-point play made it 101-77 with 12:04 still left, and another three-point play swelled the lead to 123-90--breaking the scoring record--with 6:39 left.

Guard Enoch Simmons scored the last of his 14 points on a long jumper from the corner to break 150.
