Canyons Romps Over Victor Valley, 118-73; Hughes Sets School Assist Record With 14

Sophomore Guard Derek Hughes had a school-record 14 assists and Kevin Honaker scored a season-high 24 points off the bench Saturday to lead College of the Canyons to an easy 118-73 victory over Victor Valley.
Honaker, a freshman guard, connected on 11 of his 16 from the floor and his both his free throws.
Starting guard James Mixon scored 19 points for the Cougars and teammate Doug Aitken added 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Canyons took an early lead and had a 61-38 advantage by halftime in the nonleague game. The Cougars shot 60% from the field, hitting on 55 of 91 attempts.
Starting forward Jeff Oldfield led the Rams with 24 points and guard Phil Domenquez added 21.
Canyons, 10-7 in the preseason, will open Mountain Valley Conference play at Valley next Friday night at 7:30.
