El Capitan High School rallied from a 10-point deficit in the third quarter Tuesday to beat visiting Mt. Miguel, 57-53, and assume undisputed control of first place in the Grossmont League.

The Vaqueros (9-1, 13-3) caught the seventh-ranked Matadors (8-2, 11-6) early in the fourth quarter and led by at least two points until the buzzer. Two free throws by Steve Burroughs in the final minutes ensured the victory.

“We did a perfect job in the first half,” Mt. Miguel Coach Art Edge said. “In the second half we lost our intensity. We stopped moving on offense, we didn’t get the turnovers we got in the first half.”
