JC BASKETBALL : Pierce Tops L. A. City in Overtime

Pierce College won its first Metropolitan Conference basketball game Wednesday by defeating L. A. City College, 78-76, in overtime.

The score was tied at 70 for the final minute of overtime before Randy Warner led a four-point Pierce drive.

The Brahmas took a three-point lead at halftime after Tony Thomas scored six points with a minute left in the first half. Pierce is 1-7 in league, 5-17 overall. L. A. City College is 0-7.

Valley 79, Antelope Valley 76--Forward John Windham rebounded a missed shot and scored with 12 seconds left, and teammate Erik Harden sank two free throws with five seconds remaining to gave visiting Valley College a win over Antelope Valley.

At halftime, the game was tied at 45.

After trading baskets for most of the second half, Antelope Valley’s Ice Lewis sank two free throws to give his team a 76-75 lead. Antelope Valley had a chance to go ahead with four seconds remaining but turned the ball over on the inbounds play.

Harden sank another free throw before the game’s end to ensure the win.

Valley (women) 76, L.A. Trade Tech 71--The Monarchs defeated defending state champion Los Angeles Trade Tech behind the 35 points of Jill Daniels.

The Mountain Valley Conference game was tied at 37 at the half, but Valley managed to pull ahead by outscoring Trade Tech, 8-1, in the first few minutes in the second half. Monarch forward Mary Jo Testa scored six of the points.

Nineteen of Jill Daniels’ points came in the second half in the game played at Valley.

Trade Tech, 1-2 in conference and 11-8 overall, started the season with a 37-game conference win streak. Valley is 3-0 in conference, 10-10 overall.
