ORANGE COUNTY GIRLS’ BASKETBALL : Roundup : Estancia Overwhelms University, 46-18 : Eagles Make Certain They Don’t Suffer Another Heartbreaking Loss

The Estancia High School girls’ basketball team, which has lost several close games this year, made sure it didn’t happen again Thursday night when it routed University, 46-18, in a Sea View League game at University.

The Eagles, who have lost nine games by margins of six points or less, took a 16-1 lead in the first quarter. Their man-to-man defense limited the Trojans to only five field-goal attempts in the quarter.

Estancia (3-8 in league and 5-12 overall maintained the trend in the second quarter to take a 24-6 lead at the half.

The Eagles received strong performances from their forwards. Annie Foley led the offense with 14 points, while Dana Nasby had 8 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. Guard Nancy Hastings added 5 assists and center Leslie Self had 15 rebounds.

In other Sea View League games:

Corona del Mar 67, Newport Harbor 29--The Sea Kings improved their record to 9-0 with an easy win at Corona del Mar. Center Michele Willard scored 21 points and had 23 rebounds to lead Corona del Mar. Sea King guard K.C. Jones also turned in an excellent game with 24 points and 6 assists. The Sailors (1-8) got 12 points from Sharon Andros.

Costa Mesa 47, Saddleback 46--The Roadrunners had three opportunities to win in the last 14 seconds of the game, but they missed two jump shots and a free throw to lose at home. The win moved Costa Mesa into a third-place tie with the Roadrunners. Costa Mesa (6-3, 11-8) was led by Jennifer Boyett’s 15 points and 12 from Stephanie Swanson. Saddleback (6-3, 6-8) was led by sophomore guard Monica Walton, who scored 22 points.

Woodbridge 63, Laguna Beach 34--Forward Gilly Powell contributed 26 points and 14 rebounds as the second-place Warriors (8-1, 14-6) won at Woodbridge. Warrior forward Diana Zilko added 12 points and 8 rebounds. Forward Bridget Dittman had 11 points for the Artists (3-6).

In Sunset League action:

Huntington Beach 57, Marina 49--The Vikings’ chances of making the playoffs were virtually ended in this loss to the Oilers at Marina. Although forward Temre Kuester scored 16 points and center Dawn Charroin had 13, the Vikings (2-4, 12-8) shot poorly overall, making just 33% of their attempts from the floor. The Oilers (2-4, 10-11) were led by forward Tammy Chick with 18 points and by forward Shawna Armstrong, who scored 12 points.

In Freeway League action:

Fullerton 70, Buena Park 42--Forward Vicki Silva scored 28 points and had 13 rebounds as the Indians remained in second place by beating the Coyotes at Fullerton. Guard Heidi Shikuma added 20 points for the Indians (5-1, 14-5).

In Orange League action:

Brea-Olinda 63, Valencia 50--The Wildcats (6-0) remained undefeated in league as Carrie Egan scored 17 points and Susan Tousey added 13 at Valencia. The Tigers (2-4, 11-7) got 19 points from center Ronnette McWeeney and 13 from guard Steffi Strauss.

Western 56, Savanna 55--Guard Kelly Stewart made two free throws with 10 seconds left to give the Pioneers the win at Western. Melanie Williams and Tammy James had 12 points each for the Pioneers. Vanetta Dorlis led Savanna with 21 points.

Magnolia 90, Anaheim 35--The Sentinels (5-1, 13-6) were led by the 31 points of center Michelle Carter in their easy victory at Magnolia. Teammate Dawne Borum added 16 points. The Colonists (0-6, 0-15) were led by Tammy Bartley, who scored 14.

In Angelus League action:

Mater Dei 66, Pius X 25--The Monarch defense forced 40 Warrior turnovers at Pius X in Downey. The Monarchs’ Debbie Wagner scored 16 points and Noelle Manfre, Geri Gainey and Kim Ellerman each added 10 as Mater Dei (7-0, 17-7) remained in first place.

In Century League action:

Foothill 61, Orange 19--The Knights (9-0, 19-1) remained in first place as forward Stephanie Fleischaker scored 19 points and guard Felice Geddy added 18 at Orange. The Panthers (6-3, 12-7) were led by Suzette Sargeant, who scored 13.

Tustin 49, Santa Ana Valley 34--Tustin (7-2) earned sole control of second place by defeating the Falcons (2-7) at Santa Ana Valley (2-7, 6-7). The Falcons’ high scorer was Cathy Smith with 11 points.

In Garden Grove League action:

Bolsa Grande 49, Los Amigos 29--The second-place Matadors (4-2, 8-8) played good team defense to beat the Lobos at Bolsa Grande. Roseann Flores scored 16 points and Caroline Matney added 11 for Bolsa Grande. Los Amigos (3-3) received eight points from point guard Kelly Grand.

In Empire League action:

Esperanza 76, Pacifica 17--Laura Jones set a school record with 12 assists and added 9 steals for the Aztecs (9-1, 16-4) at Esperanza. Aztec forward Sharon Warmus scored 24 points and center Karen Davidson contributed 19 points and 13 rebounds. Esperanza remains tied for the league lead with Los Alamitos. Pacifica is 0-10 in league.

Los Alamitos 56, Cypress 46--Diane Sands had 14 points to help the Griffins (9-1, 15-4) remain in a first-place tie with Esperanza by beating the Centurions (9-1, 15-4) at Cypress.

Katella 45, Kennedy 30--Kelli Johnson had 15 points to lead the Knights (7-3, 14-3) at Katella. Fighting Irish guard Ursula Lovely had 17 points to lead all scorers, plus 17 rebounds. Kennedy dropped to 1-9 and 2-14.

El Dorado 58, Loara 45--The Golden Hawks’ Jill Matyuch scored just 2 points in the first half, but came back with 18 in the second half to lead El Dorado (7-3) to the win at Loara. Matyuch also contributed 16 rebounds. Teammate Cathy Newvine had 15 points and 11 rebounds. Loara (3-7, 4-13) received a strong performance from center Tricia Creason, who had a career-high 21 points.

In South Coast League action:

El Toro 74, Irvine 32--The Chargers shot 52% from the floor and controlled the boards with 60 rebounds at El Toro. The league-leading Chargers (8-0, 16-5) were led by their front line, which includes 6-foot forwards Karen Nickel (21 points and 12 rebounds) and Kathy Nickel (15 rebounds) and 6-3 center Jennifer Uecke (14 rebounds). El Toro’s Elaine Youngs added 15 points. Irvine’s Shelly Moceri scored 16 points to lead the Vaqueros.

Capistrano Valley 38, San Clemente 37--Priscilla Slim made a free throw with eight seconds left to clinch the win for the Cougars (4-4, 12-6) at Capistrano Valley. Caylin Combs’ 18 points and 11 rebounds led the Cougars. The Tritons (0-7) got nine points from Laurie Christofferson.

In Olympic League action:

Capistrano Valley Christian 45, Orange Lutheran 30--Lisa Carney scored 16 points as the Eagles (2-7, 6-8) defeated Orange Lutheran at Capistrano Valley Christian. Michelle Boltz scored 14 points for the Lancers (3-7, 7-10).
