Gamboa to Coach CSUN Linebackers

Cal State Northridge named former Franklin High Coach Rick Gamboa linebacker coach Thursday.

Gamboa, 29, had an 8-10 record in two seasons as head coach at Franklin in Los Angeles. The Panthers had a 6-3 record in 1985. He will retain his full-time teaching position there while coaching at Northridge.

Prior to Franklin, Gamboa coached at East Los Angeles College, Los Angeles City College, the National Institute of Sports in Mexico City, and Brea-Olinda High in Orange County.

The addition of Gamboa gives CSUN three assistant coaches. CSUN Coach Bob Burt, who was hired two weeks ago, said that he hopes to have a staff of eight by the end of next week. The Matadors still have coaching vacancies for the defensive line, wide receivers, running backs and defensive ends.

Burt has filled 19 player vacancies on his football team with players from community colleges.

The Matadors gave up an average of 31 points last season, and Burt took some immediate steps toward improvement in that area by signing 12 defensive players.

On offense, CSUN made an apparent effort to shore up its line, signing two guards, a tackle, and two tight ends.

The newly signed players are:

Ken Albercrombie, RB, 5-9, 170, Harbor College; Dan Baytosh, OLB, 6-2, 220, Santa Ana; Brian Bowers, TE, 6-3, 225, San Jose; Walter Bruj, OLB, 6-3, 215, Chabot; Danny Delao, OG, 6-2, 250, Valley; Timothy Gardner, ILB, 6-0, 220, Mesa; Jimmie Gray, FB, 6-0, 210, Chabot; Louis Green, SS, 6-2, 195, Chabot; Tony Inglima, CB, 5-9, 170, Fullerton; Bryan Kellen, FS, 5-11, 175, San Jose.
