Eisenhower Gets a Playoff Rematch With Capistrano Valley

Thirty-two Southern Section boys’ second-round basketball playoff games, including three rematches in the 4-A Division, are scheduled tonight at 7:30.

Top-seeded Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley (25-2), led by the outside shooting of Scott Stark and Shawn Reed and the inside play of John Waikle and Jason Trask, plays Rialto Eisenhower (18-9) at Saddleback College. In December, Capistrano Valley beat Eisenhower, 77-61, in the semifinals of the Sonora Tournament.

Compton Dominguez (20-5), with point guard Marlon Vaughn, and Corona del Mar (23-4) featuring guard Jeff Fryer, the Southern Section’s second-leading scorer at 27.8, play at Compton College.

Dominguez dominated Corona del Mar in the final of the Estancia Tournament, 73-48, when Vaughn guarded Fryer and limited him to 10 field goals in 27 shots from the field.

However, Dominguez lost its leading scorer, 6-5 Ronnie Coleman, two weeks ago with a broken wrist. Cedric Ceballos has replaced Coleman and averaged 20 points and 15 rebounds in two games.

Oxnard Rio Mesa (19-5), which lost to Culver City (22-3) in the final of the Beverly Hills Tournament, 62-52, gets a chance to avenge the loss at a familiar site--Beverly Hills High.

Rio Mesa is led by 6-7 junior center Jerry Dawson and uptempo Culver City is paced by 6-4 center John Jones, who was MVP at both the Beverly Hills and Pacific Shores tournaments.

San Bernardino (24-3), the top-ranked team in the 2-A Division, plays Indio (19-4) at San Gorgonio High. San Bernardino won an earlier game between the two schools, 66-51.

In its last three games San Bernardino has been struggling, defeating Cajon by one point, losing to Victor Valley and downing Artesia (8-10), the No. 3 team from the Suburban League, 64-58, in the first round of the playoffs.
