Big Games : Crossroads Takes on Tough 29 Palms

Crossroads will continue its quest for the CIF 1-A basketball title at Twentynine Palms High School at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Crossroads, second-seeded in the playoffs, is 17-7 and coming off a 77-70 victory over Ontario Christian in the opening round.

The Roadrunners were led by Keith Davis’ 21 points and center David Wolfe, who scored all of his 16 points in the second half. Wolfe also pulled down 12 rebounds.

Crossroads will face a strong and balanced Twentynine Palms team (20-2). The Wildcats defeated Bishop, 66-52, last week to advance in the playoffs. They were led by twins Rickey and Rocky Ray, who scored 16 and 15 points.

“They’re tall and play a deliberate game,” said Crossroads’ Coach Eliott Turret. Turret said his team will try to control the tempo of the game and play at a fast pace to combat the Wildcats’ slow-motion tempo.

Wildcats’ Coach Bob Tate said his team will have to shut down Crossroads’ outside game and play solid defense.

In Tuesday night playoff games, the Harris brothers, Kelvin and Keith, powered Santa Monica (23-3) to a 90-60 rout of Santa Barbara (16-7) in the 4-A CIF second round. And steady Santa Monica guard Carrick DeHart added some finesse to the mix.

Kelvin scored a game-high 22 points, Keith had 20 points and 10 rebounds, and DeHart added 8 assists, 9 rebounds and 9 points.

Dominguez, Santa Monica’s next opponent, advanced with a 53-37 victory over Corona del Mar. Jeff Fryer of the Sea Kings, the Southern Section’s second-best scorer with an average of 27.8 points a game, was held to 12 by Dominguez guard Marlon Vaughn.

This one is at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Santa Monica College.

Andre Gougis scored a team-high 12 points to lead Murphy (17-7) to a 63-60 upset of Banning (21-4). The Nobles will meet South Pasadena (20-6), which blew by Mountain View, 75-52, behind 29 points by 6-7 Ken Boldt and 25 points and 20 rebounds from 6-6 Eric McArthur.

Murphy plays South Pasadena at 7:30 p.m. Friday at San Marino High.

In the Small Schools division, Bel Air Prep (16-8) will face Rosamond (18-6) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Harvard School, and Yeshiva (18-4) will be at Ventura Temple Christian (22-1) at 8:30 p.m. Saturday.
