SOUTHERN REGIONAL BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS : Santa Clara Girls Have Little Trouble With San Marcos in Regional Opener

Kathy Torres scored 14 points and Kim Weich added 12 Wednesday night to lead Santa Clara High of Oxnard past San Marcos, 53-42, in the first round of the Division II Girls’ Southern Regional basketball playoffs at Ventura College.
Robin Paladino scored 14 points to lead San Marcos (26-3). The Knights, after a basket by Paladino led, 2-0, before Santa Clara took over. Torres scored her team’s first five points and helped Santa Clara to a 19-12 lead after the first quarter.
Santa Clara pushed its lead to 31-19 at halftime. Santa Clara (25-4) moves into the Southern Regional finals Saturday night in the Los Angeles Sports Arena.
