San Diego Prep Baseball : Carlsbad Tops El Camino in 11

Maybe the Carlsbad and El Camino high school baseball teams have been watching too many Padres-Los Angeles Dodgers games.

The Padres and Dodgers have played four wild extra-inning games this season. The Lancers and Wildcats played one of their own Wednesday.

Paul Bonagura hit a two-run homer over the right-center-field wall in the bottom of the 11th to give the Lancers a 5-3 Avocado League victory.

Senior Don Dewhurst (2-0 in the league) pitched all 11 innings, allowing six hits. He struck out three.

“I was astounded,” Carlsbad Coach Buddy Lewis said. “He got stronger as he went along.”

Tim Granich had two hits for the Lancers (2-1 in the league, 6-7 overall), who had eight hits.

Freddie Spears was 2 for 5 for the Wildcats (0-3 in the league).

AVOCADO LEAGUE

Ramona 4, San Pasqual 2--David Roe hit two home runs and had the game-winning RBI as the visiting Bulldogs (2-0, 7-3) beat the Golden Eagles (0-3, 5-7-1). Roe hit solo homers in the second and fourth to tie the score, 2-2. Roe, who was 3 for 3, hit an RBI double in the seventh to give Ramona the lead for good. Shawn McConaughey went the distance for the win, allowing five hits. Greg Bratton (1-3) gave up six hits in seven innings and took the loss.

Oceanside 6, San Marcos 3--Kevin McClure’s bases-loaded triple in the first inning put the host Pirates ahead early. Chris Prieto was 2 for 3 to pace Oceanside (2-1, 7-6). Pitcher Henry Jimenez (3-3) went the distance, striking out five, to earn the win. San Marcos is 2-1 and 7-5.

PALOMAR LEAGUE

Orange Glen 2, Vista 1 (8 innings)--Junior Ray Chatton (5-2) pitched an eight-inning three-hitter to lead the Patriots (1-1, 8-5) over the No.10-ranked Panthers. Chatton struck out five. With the bases loaded and two out in the bottom of the eighth, Frank Escalante hit a grounder back to the pitcher, Tony Trousset. Trousett dropped the ball, allowing Matt Fiorello to socre the winning run. Trousset combined with starter Mike Babcock for a four-hitter.

CITY WESTERN LEAGUE La Jolla 2, Clairemont 1--After defeating defending 2A champion Mission Bay Monday, La Jolla came back at Clairemont behind pitcher Jason Dodd, who went the distance for his first win of the season. Clairemont (2-3, 5-7-1) scored its run in the fifth, but La Jolla (3-2, 5-8) scored one in the top of the sixth off a John de la Vega squeeze that scored Tom Ruben. Peter White singled to right to score Mike Owens with the game-winner.

Kearny 16, University City 7--Kearny sent 16 batters to the plate in the top of the fourth and scored 12 runs. Scot Welish, who went 4 for 4 with five RBIs, delivered a bases-loaded triple in the fourth to start the scoring spree at University City. Eric Takeshita was 3 for 5 with two RBIs for Kearny (2-3, 4-9). University City fell to 3-2 in league, 6-7 overall.

CITY CENTRAL LEAGUE Crawford 16, Lincoln 3--John Wilson and Mark Burlaza had three-run homers as Crawford (3-2, 7-7) rolled over visiting Lincoln (1-4, 9-8). Bob Townsend and Albie Diaz each went 3 for 4 with two RBIs. Troy Coronado had three RBIs for Crawford. A.J. Leighton (3-2) pitched a six-hitter for the win. Anthony Johnson took the loss for Lincoln.

Christian 12, San Diego 9--An early 9-1 lead by the Patriots helped stave off a late-inning surge by streaking San Diego as Christian (2-3, 8-7-1) handed the Cavers (4-1, 8-8) their first league loss. Christian’s Mike Ippolito went 3 for 3 with four RBIs.
