San Diego Prep Baseball : Montgomery Knocks Chula Vista Into Third

Before their Metro-Mesa League high school baseball game Tuesday, first-place Montgomery and second-place Chula Vista were separated by only one game. Montgomery (6-1, 13-4) widened the gap considerably Tuesday, beating Chula Vista, 12-1. The loss sends the Spartans (4-3, 8-9) into third place.

The Aztecs scored 10 runs in the second inning on nine hits, including Clement Alsip’s two-run double, Israel Labra’s two-run triple and Robert Solis’ two-run homer.

“We just hit the ball the way we’ve been practicing,” Montgomery Coach Manuel Hermosillo said. “We were hitting all line drives, not fly balls. It’s exactly what we’ve been working for.”

Aztec pitcher Lee Langevin allowed only three hits in his six innings.

Montgomery’s Paris Jones led off the second with a line drive that got past second baseman Gilbert Canizales and was then kicked by right fielder Jorge Mora. Jones ended up at third to begin the 10-run inning.

“Those are the mental mistakes that just kill you,” Chula Vista Coach Richard Barcus said. “We made a mistake and it cost us 10 runs. If it hadn’t been for that play, I think it would have been a shutout until fifth or sixth inning.”

Sweetwater 8, Bonita Vista 1--Pitcher Victor Ramirez (3-0) threw a three-hitter as Sweetwater (4-2, 7-10) upset the seventh-ranked Barons (3-3, 11-7). Robert Suda and Augie Ruiz each had two RBIs for Sweetwater.

Southwest 3, Castle Park 2--Tony Paranada hit a solo homer in the sixth for the Raiders (5-2, 9-6) over Castle Park (2-4, 8-8). Starter Juan Cabrillo pitched six innings for the win.

Coronado 10, Marian 7--Steve Lucal was 3 for 4, with a home run, double and four RBIs to lead the Islanders (4-3, 9-7).

GROSSMONT LEAGUE Santana 4, Monte Vista 2--Starter Bill Reed (6-0) struck out 13 in 6 innings to the lead third-ranked Sultans (7-1, 15-2). Mount Miguel 12, El Cajon 2--Don Young was 3 for 4, including two home runs and a double to lead the Matadors (3-4-1, 8-8-1) past the Braves (1-7, 1-10).

Helix 9, Grossmont 7--Time Neal hit a two-run double and Jerry Oedewaldt had a two-run single in a five-run sixth inning for the Highlanders (4-4, 6-10).

Granite Hills 13, El Capitan 8--The Eagles (5-3, 9-7) scored eight runs in the seventh for the win.
