Wilson Hires Workman Cage Coach Stimpfel, Winner in 1984

Tim Stimpfel, who coached Workman High of Industry to the CIF 2-A Division championship in 1983-84, has been named boys basketball coach at Wilson of Hacienda Heights.

Stimpfel replaces Mike Lowe, who resigned to become coach at San Gorgonio High after guiding Wilson to the state Division II championship last season.

The 35-year-old Stimpfel posted an 81-66 record in six years at Workman, including a 26-4 mark in the championship season, and also coached for four years at Palo Verde in Blythe. Workman slumped to a 1-19 record last year.

Stimpfel will inherit a Wilson team that posted a 31-3 record en route to the state title last season.

A successor to Stimpfel has not been named, but Workman officials have been interviewing candidates this week.

Two-sport standout Debra Larsen of Cal Poly Pomona has been named 1985-86 female athlete of the year by the California Collegiate Athletic Assn.

Larsen, a junior who stars in basketball and track, gave an outstanding performance in the NCAA Division II national track and field championships in May. She won the seven-event heptathlon with a meet-record 5,827 points and placed third in the long jump, fifth in the shot put and fifth in the javelin to score 25 1/2 points in the meet.

The 5-10 Larsen also had a brilliant basketball season, averaging 13.8 points and 8.4 rebounds to lead the Broncos to their second straight Division II title. Larsen scored 41 points and grabbed 23 rebounds in two games at the finals in Springfield, Mass., to earn tournament most valuable player honors.

Larsen was the only woman named All-CCAA in both track and basketball. She also was selected Pomona’s female athlete of the year, made the Women’s Basketball Coaches Assn. All-District 8 team and was chosen most valuable player of the Division II basketball quarterfinals.

Freshman tennis star Edna Olivares of Cal State Los Angeles, who reached the semifinals of the Division II individual tennis championships, finished third in the voting for female athlete of the year.

Cal State Los Angeles triple jumper Stan Oporski tied for second in the voting with Robert Jimerson of UC Riverside and Mike Brocki of Cal State Dominguez Hills. Cal Poly Pomona distance runner Eddie Toro finished sixth.

-30- Three players from the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team have signed contracts with major league teams, the school has announced.

Pitcher Mike Munoz was signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers and third baseman Marty Rivero and pitcher Kirk Washington by the Chicago Cubs. Munoz and Rivero were selected in the June major league draft and Washington signed as a free agent.

Munoz, a 6-2 junior left-hander from West Covina, posted a 4-10 record and 3.34 earned-run average with 76 strikeouts in 110 innings last season after a 16-6 mark as a sophomore.

Rivero, a 6-1 senior from Mira Loma, was one of the top hitters for the Broncos with a .310 batting average, 10 home runs and 43 runs batted in. He is Pomona’s career leader in home runs with 28.

Washington, a 5-10 senior right-hander from Diamond Bar, had a 10-4 record and 5.10 earned-run average with 92 strikeouts in 109 innings. The CIF 4-A player of the year at Walnut High in 1982, holds Pomona career records with 308 strikeouts, 73 games pitched and 439 innings pitched in four years.

Cal State Los Angeles women’s tennis star Edna Olivarez, ranked No. 2 in NCAA Division II by the Intercollegiate Tennis Coaches Assn., has been named to the division All-American team.

A freshman from the Philippines, she posted a brilliant 34-4 record in singles against Division II players this season and was 9-3 at the Division I level.

The national 18-and-under champion in the Philippines last year, Olivarez lost in the Division II semifinals to Sandra Elliot of Northern Colorado.

Three basketball players from Azusa Pacific University have been selected to play for the Athletes in Action women’s team that will tour Peru, Venezuela, Brazil and Ecuador in July and August.

The three, all seniors, are 6-0 center Cindy DeYoung, 5-11 forward Linda Kading and 5-8 guard Denise Duncan.

DeYoung, Azusa Pacific’s all-time leading scorer, averaged 18.1 points and 10.9 rebounds to lead the Cougars to a 30-5 record and a berth in the NAIA national tournament last season. Duncan, second on the all-time scoring list, averaged 14.9 points and 6.5 rebounds, and Kading, making her second tour with Athletes in Action, averaged 10 points.

South Pasadena and Arcadia high schools, which reached the CIF 3-A Division boys volleyball semifinals, have each placed one player on the division’s all-CIF team.

Arcadia, which lost to eventual champion Loyola in the semifinals, placed senior Mike Kristensen on the first team and senior Paul Bridgeman on the second team.

South Pasadena, which lost to Brentwood in the semifinals, landed senior Chris Ellis on the first team and junior Jeff Wildenbour on the second squad.
