Orange County Roundup : Scarsone, Shiflett Sign Pro Pacts

Two members of the Rancho Santiago College baseball team have signed professional contracts and four others will continue their careers at four-year colleges.

Sophomore second baseman Steve Scarsone (Canyon High School) signed with the Philadelphia Phillies. He hit .377 for the Dons this season. Sophomore right-hander Chris Shiflett (La Sierra High), who was 8-2 with one save, signed with the Texas Rangers.

Ruben Gonzales (Buena Park), who led the Dons with a .433 batting average and was voted the college’s male Athlete of the Year, will attend Pepperdine University in the fall. Sophomore shortstop Matt Beltran (Canyon) and sophomore left-hander Mike Sanders (Magnolia) will attend UC Riverside. Sophomore right-hander Wayne Gilles (Canyon) will attend the University of Arizona.

Some of the top professional and amateur female surfers in California will compete in the Women’s International Surfing Assn. Church Surfing Challenge Saturday or Sunday at Burch Beach at Camp Pendleton, south of San Clemente.

The day of competition will depend upon surfing conditions, with the first heat scheduled to enter the water at 7 a.m. The event is the fifth on the WISA circuit, in which surfers compete for prizes and ratings points that enable them to qualify for the year-end championships and future world-class events.

The Anaheim Pop Warner football league will have sign-ups for next season between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday at Brookhurst Park. Boys 8 to 15 who weigh between 60 and 145 pounds are eligible to play. Physical examinations are required and will be provided.

A second sign-up period will be June 28 at the Brookhurst Community Center.

About 2,000 riders are expected to participate in the Santiago Canyon Bike Ride Saturday, begining at 9 a.m. at Santiago Canyon Road and Chapman Avenue near Orange. The 30-mile course will proceed along Santiago Canyon Road past Irvine Lake, continuing to Trabuco Canyon Road and past the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station before finishing at Heritage Park in Irvine.

Sign-ups for the Larry Sunderman Eagle Basketball Camp will begin noon Monday in the Estancia High School gym.

The seven-day camp will continue through July 1. Sessions will run from 12:30 to 3 p.m. daily for boys in grades 3 through 10 and girls in grades 3 through 12.

Sunderman, former Estancia boys’ coach and currently the women’s coach at Orange Coast College, will be the camp director. Guest speakers from local high schools and colleges will assist Sunderman.

Cal State Fullerton will play host to the first Pony Girls Senior Invitational Softball Tournament the weekend of July 4-6.

The California Raiders, national Senior Girls champions the past five years, and the Gordons Panthers, national Junior Girls champions the past three seasons, will participate. Other teams include the NorCal Tremors, Inland Cities Raiders, Orcutt Express, Van Nuys Ball Hawks, Hanford Aces and the Cypress Gamblers.

UC Irvine announced Thursday the signing of two high school athletes to athletic scholarships.

Erik Peterson, a high jumper from Monte Vista High School in Spring Valley who has the school record there with a jump of 6-8 1/2, will compete for the Anteaters’ track and field team.

Steve Oliver, a member of Calabasas’ Southern Section 3-A championship tennis team, will play tennis for UCI Coach Greg Patton.
