Two all-star games should keep loyal high school sports fans scurrying from East to West today.

The Bernie Milligan all-star baseball game will pit 40 of the best high school players from the Valley area against one another in a 4 p.m. contest at Cal State Northridge.

About the time that ends, the Ventura County all-star football game will begin about 50 miles west, at Ventura High.

Ten first-team Times All-Valley players will participate in the Milligan game, including player of the year Rodney Beck.

Joining Beck on the East team is Frank Zavala of San Fernando, Peter Washington of North Hollywood, Chris Joy of Saugus and Jason Peterson of Grant.

Three players from the Granada Hills team that fell to Beck and Grant in the City 4-A championship game are on the West team--Sean Casey, Bob Allen and Greg Fowble. They will be joined by Times all-stars Shaun Murphy of Simi Valley and Ed Hall of Thousand Oaks.

In the football game, which starts at 7:30 p.m., 29 Valley-area players will compete for the East team, including two key players from Marmonte League co-champions Thousand Oaks and Simi Valley.

Dan Nagelmann of Thousand Oaks is the East’s only quarterback. He threw for 1,298 yards and completed 85 of 185 passes last season.

The East’s defense is led by All-Southern Section linebacker Tony White of Simi Valley.

The East will be playing without Times All-Valley selections M.J. Nelson of Simi Valley and Gary Wellman of Westlake. Both players were selected to play in the Shrine Game at the Rose Bowl in August and are therefore ineligible for tonight’s game.
