Banke Wins Medalist Honors in State Amateur Golf; May Second
Dana Banke of Castro Valley shot a two-over-par 74 at Pebble Beach Golf Links for a 54-hole total of 214 to take medalist honors Wednesday in the 75th California Amateur Golf Championship.
Banke survived a triple bogey on the par-4 ninth hole, when he was penalized two strokes for a lost ball, to finish three shots ahead of 17-year-old Bob May of La Habra, who closed with a 77 for 217.
Mitch Voges of Simi Valley and Mark Gilmartin of Reno were at 219, followed by Carl Wagner of Palo Alto and Larry Silveira of Oakley, both at 221.
It took a score of 229 or better to qualify for today’s match play. Among the players who failed to survive the 32-player cut was Gary Vanier of Albany, who won the championship in 1982.
In the opening round, Banke goes against Fred Solomon of Stockton, May meets Bobby Lasken of Whittier, Voges faces Pat Burke of West Covina and Gilmartin meets Jim Meyers of Oceanside. The 36-hole championship final is Saturday.
