Mater Dei Will Host 16-Team Basketball Tournament Today

Two-time defending Southern Section 5-A champion Mater Dei High School will be host to a 16-team summer basketball tournament beginning today in the Monarch gymnasium in Santa Ana.

Among the schools entered are perennial basketball powers Long Beach Poly, Dominguez, Ocean View and Santa Clara. The championship game is scheduled for 9 p.m. Saturday. Today’s first-round pairings:

10:30 a.m.--St. Monica vs. Dominguez; Noon--El Toro vs. Pius X; 1:30 p.m.--L.B. Poly vs. Bosco Tech; 3 p.m.--St. Anthony vs. St. Paul; 4:30 p.m.--Tustin vs. Estancia; 6 p.m.--Mater Dei JV vs. Santa Clara; 7:30 p.m.--Ocean View vs. San Ramon; 9 p.m.--Mater Dei vs. Los Amigos.
