The junior U.S. national field hockey team, which trains at Moorpark College, won a three-match series last week in Ottawa from the Canadian under-21 national team, the first time that has been done since 1956, according to U.S. Coach Rick Purser.

After tying the first two matches of the series, the United States used goals by Mark Rubalcava and Steve Paredes to win, 2-0, Sunday.

Practice began this week for the Daily News All-Star football game that will be played July 18 at 7:30 p.m. at Pierce College. The teams for the seventh annual game are made up primarily of players who recently graduated from Valley-area high schools.

Simi Valley’s Dave Murphy and Taft’s Tom Stevenson will coach the West team, while Alemany’s Enrique Lopez and former Hoover Coach Fred Cuccia will lead the East squad.

Dave Crossairt, a right-handed pitcher from Valley College, has signed to play at Cal State Dominguez Hills, the school announced. Crossairt, a graduate of North Hollywood High, compiled a 7-1 record with a 1.94 earned-run average in 92 innings last season.

The two-time All-Mountain Valley Conference selection joins Valley teammate Chris Haslock at Dominguez Hills, which won the 1986 California Collegiate Athletic Assn. title.

Golfer Doug Harper of Chatsworth shot a 74 to finish 10th in the Golden State Tour at Shadowridge Country Club and earn $275.

Jimmy Chang of Westlake qualified for a U.S. junior amateur tournament to be held in Muirfield, Ohio, Aug. 4-9. He shot a 143 in the local qualifying tournament at Yorba Linda Country Club.

The District 40 Little League all-star tournament opens Monday at the Cal State Northridge Little League complex. Barbara Jordan, an All-American center fielder entering her senior year at Northridge, will be honored at the ceremony. Jordan began her career in the District 40 Little League.

Al Martinez, 16, of Woodland Hills defeated Danny Rubins of Beverly Hills, 6-1, 6-3, on Sunday in the finals of a junior tennis tournament at the Racquet Centre in Studio City. On Saturday, Sara Eipe, 18, of Chatsworth lost to Sonja Panajotovic of Los Angeles in the finals, 7-5, 6-3.

The Southern California Volleyball Club’s Red team, featuring several of the Valley’s top players, finished 12th at a volleyball tournament at UC Davis this past weekend. Nearly 200 teams and 2,000 players participated in the tournament.
