BRIEFLY : Cal Lutheran to Honor Brian Kelley of Giants

Cal Lutheran will honor Brian Kelley, a two-time All-American for the Kingsmen who played 11 years with the New York Giants, with its Alumni Achievement Award.

A member of the 1971 Kingsmen national championship team, the inside linebacker was an All-American in 1971 and 1972 and holds the CLU career record for interceptions with 17.

Kelley, a late-round draft pick of the Giants in 1973, led New York in tackles from 1974 to 1976. His best year was 1981, when he had 186 tackles and two key fumble recoveries in the Giants’ playoff drive.

For the past eight years, Kelley has played host to the Kelley Benefit Golf Tournament in Thousand Oaks, raising money each year to benefit CLU’s athletic scholarship fund. He will receive the award at the Kingsmen golf tournament July 21 at the Wood Ranch Country Club in Simi Valley.

Voges in Top Amateur Golf Tournament

Mitch Voges of Simi Valley will compete next week in the Southern California Golf Assn. Amateur Championship, the nation’s oldest amateur golf tournament.

More than 1,100 golfers will compete in qualifying rounds that will be held at 11 different locations Monday and Tuesday. The finals are scheduled for Friday and Saturday at the Hillcrest Country Club in Los Angeles.

Voges is considered a strong contender in a wide open field. Two-time defending champion Brad Greer and 1985 U.S. amateur champion Sam Randolph have turned professional.

Mid-Valley, an American Roundball Corp. basketball all-star team, is seeded first in the Puma-Slam ‘N Jam invitational tournament scheduled at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion from Tuesday through next Saturday.

The competition will feature 26 high school all-star teams from across the country. Top players for Mid-Valley are Sean Higgins and Chris Mills of Fairfax High, Don MacLean of Simi Valley and Kevin Franklin of Taft.

Len Mohney’s appointment as successor to Mike Gillespie as baseball coach at College of the Canyons was approved Thursday by the Santa Clarita Valley Community College District Board.

Mohney was Gillespie’s assistant coach for 10 years. Gillespie, who resigned June 3 to become coach at USC, compiled a 418-165 record and led Canyons to the state championship three times in the past six years.

Cyclist Thurlow Rodgers of Van Nuys took seventh place in a 71-mile race over the Long Lake Road course at Spokane, Wash., on Thursday.

Lance Cross, the All-Southern Section tailback who quit Canyon High’s football team in May, returned to practice Tuesday and says he plans to play in the fall.

Cross, who rushed for 2,440 yards and scored 28 touchdowns in his first two seasons with the Cowboys, had left the team after telling Coach Harry Welch he needed a rest.

Warner Brothers is one of several Valley-based corporations that has been invited to compete in the Manufacturers Hanover Corporate Challenge Triathlon July 27 at the Coliseum.

The teams will have four members, each of whom will perform one leg of the triathlon, which includes a 3-mile run, a 10-mile bike ride, a 500-meter swim and another 3-mile run.

ABC sportscaster Ted Dawson is the host of the event, which will be staged in the Coliseum Olympic Pool and the surrounding area.

Wimpy Halstead of Simi Valley, who was scheduled to fight Purcell Davis of Detroit on Tuesday at Veteran’s Memorial Civic Center in Culver City, has been sidelined with a bruised left hand.

The 22-year-old heavyweight, who is 6-3, 212, suffered the injury Tuesday during a sparring match. Halstead is 9-0 with eight knockouts.
