Woodland Hills Prepares for Legion Series

The Woodland Hills American Legion team will fly to Oakland on Saturday for the start of the state tournament a little more humble than when it started postseason play.

After sweeping three games in the District 20 double-elimination playoffs and threatening to do the same in the Sixth Area tournament, Woodland Hills proved fallible Sunday before winning the title.

Camarillo marred Woodland Hills’ postseason record at UCLA’s Jackie Robinson Stadium by winning the first game of a doubleheader, 9-5, after being humiliated in a 22-5 loss to Woodland Hills on Friday.

Woodland Hills (35-6) rebounded with a 19-5 rout of Camarillo in Sunday’s second game to earn the Sixth Area championship and a trip to the state tournament in Yountville in the Napa Valley. In the first round of the six-team, double-elimination state tournament that ends next Tuesday, Woodland Hills plays Fullerton on Saturday at 4 p.m.

The winner and runner-up in the state tournament will advance.

The winner will go on to the Western Regional Playoffs, to be played Aug. 20-Aug. 24 in Palo Alto, for a chance to qualify for the World Series in Rapid City, S.D., at the end of the month.

The second-place team will go to the Northwest Regional Playoffs in Corvallis, Ore., which will be played Aug. 20-24. The Northwest Regional winner will also advance to the World Series.
