The Cal State Northridge women’s volleyball team, coming off a second-place finish in the NCAA Division II championships last season, begins the 1986 season Friday against Alaska-Anchorage in the UC Davis Tournament.

The Lady Matadors begin play in the 31-team tournament at 6 p.m. The tournament is divided into five brackets. Northridge shares a bracket with Cal, Hawaii Hilo, St. Mary’s, Cal State Sonoma and Alaska-Anchorage.

The top two teams in each bracket advance to a double-elimination round that begins Saturday at noon. The championship match is expected to begin at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Division I power UCLA is one of the favorites in the tournament, along with San Jose State, the defending tournament champion. Portland State, which has defeated Northridge in the Division II final the past two seasons, is also in the tournament.

Former Kennedy High catcher Phil Lombardi, who was called up to the New York Yankees from their Triple-A affiliate in Columbus on Monday, hit his first major league home run Tuesday night in Oakland. Lombardi’s two-run shot in the seventh inning off Curt Young tied the game, 5-5, and the Yankees went on to win, 9-8.

Pam Buckner of Reno averaged 235 per game to win the Worldwide Women Professional Bowlers Tournament last weekend at the Brunswick Valley Bowl in Simi Valley. Buckner had a total pin count of 4,070 to edge Pat Rossler of Santa Clara by four pins. Buckner won $700, while Robin Romeo of Van Nuys took home $260 for finishing eighth.

Wayne Bryan of Camarillo defeated John McCampbell of Ventura 7-6, 6-4, to capture the singles title at the Pacific Coast 35 Grass Court Tennis Championships on Monday in Montecito. Tom Rettenmaier and Bob Collins of Tarzana won the doubles title, beating Dave Grokenberger and Ted Campbell of Santa Barbara, 7-6, 7-6.

Wayne Benson of Van Nuys shot a 145 for 36 holes to finish fifth at the Long Beach City Golf Championships last weekend at the El Dorado Golf Club. Benson concluded play four strokes behind Steve Lass of Altadena and John Jouglard of Anaheim.

Niesi Sie of Van Nuys defeated Ron Nielson of Westlake, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2, to win the 35 Singles title at the U.S. Pro Assn. California Championships at North Ranch Country Club last weekend. In regular singles action, Dave Smith of Studio City lost, 7-6, 6-2, to Rolly Zalameda of Los Angeles in semifinal action. Zalameda then lost the title match to Steve Schultz of Irvine, 6-4, 6-4.

Michael Ayers of San Fernando finished first in the 40-lap Sportsman main event in stock car racing at Saugus Speedway. Joe Stewart of Chatsworth was second, while Chris Peedan of Newhall was third. Gary Johnson of Valencia was fourth. In the 25-lap Street category, John Cran of Reseda was first, while Craig Rayburn of Simi Valley finished third. Rayburn was also second in the Figure 8 Main (15 laps) event.
