Blaise Bryant rushed for 190 yards and 2 touchdowns in 24 carries as Cypress High School beat Chaffey, 28-0, in a nonleague season opener for both teams at Ontario, giving new head Coach John Selby his first victory.

Bryant scored the first Centurion touchdown midway through the first quarter on a three-yard run. He later scored on a 93-yard run with 4:03 remaining in the third quarter, coming one play after Chaffey running back Tom Shores hit for a 74-yard quick kick on third down.

Cypress’ other speedster, converted quarterback Troy O’Leary, caught a 37-yard touchdown pass from David Brunet on the Centurions’ second possession of the game with 2:30 left in the first quarter.

O’Leary caught 5 passes for 83 yards and also rushed for 27 yards in 3 carries.

Brunet helped close out the Centurion scoring 53 seconds into the final quarter as Chaffey’s defensive backfield double-teamed O’Leary, leaving Jason Friedman alone for a 24-yard touchdown pass.

The Cypress defense held Chaffey to 107 yards total offense. Mike Gee had two of the four Centurion interceptions against Tiger quarterbacks Felix Figueroa and Kalani Mattson, who completed just one pass.

The victory snaps a seven-game Cypress losing streak that began during last year’s Empire League schedule.
