FALL SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS : GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL PREVIEW : Louisville Upsets Marlborough in Four Games

After losing its first three matches of the season, Louisville High made its first victory an impressive one.

The Royals upset Marlborough, the top-ranked team in the Southern Section 4-A division, 9-15, 16-14, 15-12, 15-8, Tuesday at Louisville.

Westlake def. Simi Valley 6-15, 15-5, 5-15, 15-11, 15-13--Sandy Kranz, a senior outside hitter, led Westlake (2-3) with 12 kills in a Marmonte League opener at Simi Valley. Westlake’s Dana Simone had 11 kills and six aces. Tristin Graham set 11 kills for Westlake and setter Karen Margozwitz had seven aces.

L.A. Baptist def. La Verne Lutheran 15-6, 15-5, 15-8--Laurie Evans, a two-time All-Alpha League hitter, had seven kills for the Knights (1-0) in their league opener.

Montclair Prep def. L.A. Lutheran 15-8, 15-11, 11-15, 15-3--Cheryl Conly had 11 kills and Cindy Stein had 10 for Montclair Prep (3-0) in an Alpha League opener at L.A. Lutheran. K.C. Mancebo served 18 points for Montclair Prep.

Burroughs def. Crescenta Valley, 15-8, 15-8, 15-6--Debbie Penney, a junior middle blocker of Burroughs (3-0), had 14 kills and six blocks in a nonleague match. Senior Mary Ann Wagner added 10 kills and six blocks.

Notre Dame def. Immaculate Heart 15-5, 15-5, 4-15, 2-15, 15-4--The Knights were led by middle hitters Kristin Borella and Andrea Vanducci and outside hitter Laurie Jones in a nonleague match at Notre Dame.

Royal def. Thousand Oaks, 15-8, 15-10, 15-11--Royal was led by outside hitter Lura Braden and setters Julie Myers and Julie Dahlberg in a Marmonte League opener at Royal.

Braden had 10 kills and two blocks. Myers ran the Royal offense with precision, setting the ball 56 times. Dahlberg set the ball 20 times.

Royal, the top-ranked team in the Southern Section 2-A Division, has a 2-0 overall record.

COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL

Athletes in Action def. CSUN 15-2, 15-10, 15-4--Lorri Polaski, who played at the University of Hawaii, had 10 kills for AIA in the exhibition game. Sue Darcy led CSUN with nine kills.

WATER POLO

Hoover High def. Crespi, 14-12--Crespi (1-1) had a 10-5 lead at halftime, but Hoover came back strong in the second half to secure the win.

David Scott scored four goals for Crespi, and Chappie DeHaven and Brian Stevens each added three goals for the Celts.
