Quarterback David Chisum threw two touchdown passes to lead Sunny Hills High School to a 38-7 victory over Don Lugo Friday night in Spaulding Stadium at Buena Park.

Chisum, a 6-2, 180-pound junior was expected to share playing time this year with Trevor Painton. But when Painton was injured last week against Roland High, and Chisum led the Lancers to a 20-7 victory.

Friday night, Chisum supplied Sunny Hills Coach Tim Devaney with another outstanding performance, completing 8 of 10 passes for 168 yards. He led the Lancer offense to 38 points in a span of just 19 minutes 20 seconds from the end of the first quarter to the middle of the third.

“I thought David showed a lot of poise in there tonight,” said Devaney. “He was going to alternate with Trevor before (Trevor) got hurt, but he has come through with two really good games for us.”

Devaney also gave much of the credit for the victory to his offensive line, which gave Chisum plenty of time to throw and led the way for the rejuvenated Lancer running attack.

“(The offensive line) needed a game like this,” Devaney said. “They’re probably the youngest part of our team and they really opened some holes for our running backs.”

The Lancers opened the scoring with 1:59 left in the first quarter when Chisum culminated an 80-yard drive with a 35-yard touchdown pass to Rick DeFazio. In the drive, Chisum was 3 for 3 passing for 63 yards and the touchdown.

Touchdown runs by Brian Edmonds (5 yards) and Juan Ricoy (16 yards) followed in the second quarter for Sunny Hills, and placekicker Carlos Miramontes capped the first-half scoring with a 44-yard field goal to put the Lancers ahead, 24-0.

Sunny Hills is now 2-0. Don Lugo is 1-1.
