Share

La Quinta High School’s Brian Giuliano missed a 28-yard field goal with no time remaining Friday night, allowing Woodbridge to hold on for 7-6 nonleague victory in Irvine Stadium.

The Aztecs moved into field-goal range when quarterback Derek Debbs hit David Harriger on a 21-yard pass play with eight seconds left.

La Quinta, with no timeouts remaining, moved its field-goal unit onto the field. Giuliano got his kick off as time ran out, but the officials didn’t signal whether it was good or not.

Instead, they had signaled Woodbridge offsides before the play had begun. Giuliano got another chance to win it, but his kick just missed to the left.

Woodbridge (2-0) went ahead with 4:06 left on a seven-yard touchdown run by David Townsend, who was held to 28 yards on 8 carries. Kieth Boothroyd kicked the extra point.

A personal foul by the Aztecs moved the ball to the La Quinta 26. Four plays later, Townsend scored on a sweep around the right side.

La Quinta (1-1) took a 6-0 lead with 10 seconds remaining in the first half on a 15-yard pass from Debbs to Harriger. However, Giuliano didn’t get his kick off on the extra point attempt because of a high snap.

La Quinta was penalized 11 times for 105 yards, and Woodbridge was flagged 8 times for 57 yards.

Stevenson was the game’s leading rusher with 64 yards on 12 carries. Jimmy Burke picked up 43 yards on 10 carries for the Warriors.
