Santa Ana High School football player Jose Avalos, who suffered a head injury in the fourth quarter of the Saints’ game against Saddleback, was in stable condition at Western Medical Center late Friday night.

According to Carlos Sanchez, a former player at Santa Ana and a friend of the Avalos family, Avalos “suffered a concussion and should be OK. He’ll spend the night for routine observation, but he’ll go home tomorrow and will be under the care of the team doctor (Miguel Preito).”

Saddleback’s Nate Primous had carried the ball for two yards, and Avalos, a junior who plays both offensive and defensive tackle for the Saints, was injured while assisting on the tackle with 9:16 remaining in the game.

Avalos remained on the field for about 15 minutes before Santa Ana Fire Dept. paramedics arrived at Santa Ana Stadium. Avalos remained conscious while he was being assisted.
