Community College Roundup : OCC Men and Women Go Undefeated

The Orange Coast College men’s and women’s cross-country teams completed undefeated dual-meet seasons Friday to win Orange Empire Conference titles.

The men took the top four places in defeating Citrus, 18-41, and Cypress, 15-50, at San Dimas. Jose Alcraz ran the four-mile course in 19:37, his brother Sal and Dave Parsel tied for second at 19:59 and Kenji Callin was fourth at 20:19.

The OCC women took second through fifth-places to defeat Citrus, 20-43, and Cypress, 15-50. Sam Galney of Citrus won the three-mile race with a time of 18:19. Tracy Wright (18:28) of OCC was second, Debbie Lies (18:36) third, Julie Yost (18:37) fourth and Michelle Anderson (19:40) fifth.

OCC’s two teams are each 5-0 in dual meets.

In other Orange Empire Conference action:

Ramon Lopez (20:27) led the Rancho Santiago men’s team to a victory over Saddleback, 17-44, and Riverside, 15-50, at Irvine Park.

Debra Vaughan (19:41) led the Saddleback women’s team to a victory over Rancho Santiago, 18-36, and Riverside, 15-50.

In Orange Empire Conference water polo action:

Orange Coast 13, Rancho Santiago 10--Eric Keller scored four goals and Mike Bunge and Karl Stewart had three apiece for the Pirates (10-0, 19-1).

Saddleback 14, San Diego Mesa 10--Eric Long and J.D. Dennis scored five goals apiece for the Gauchos (10-1, 15-3) at San Diego.

In South Coast Conference water polo action:

Golden West 15, Rio Hondo 4--Scott Larsen and Jason Jeffrie scored five goals each for the Rustlers (8-1, 16-3) in Whittier.

Orange Empire Conference men’s soccer:

Orange Coast College 4, Cypress 1--Bob Hesse, Glenn Shaw, Peter Meechan and Curtis Watton scored one goal apiece for the Pirates (5-0-1, 7-5-1). Tarek Hilel scored for the Chargers.

In South Coast Conference men’s soccer action:

Golden West 3, Fullerton 1--Pat Penner scored two goals and Tim Bontrager added one for the Rustlers (2-2-1, 7-5-1) in Huntington Beach. Aaron Cohick scored for the Hornets.

In nonconference wrestling action:

Golden West 44, Bakersfield 8--Heavyweight Mark McBride pinned Tom Beavers to lead the Rustlers (3-2) to an easy victory in Huntington Beach.

In South Coast Conference women’s soccer action:

Golden West 4, Bakersfield 0--Shannon Augustine scored two goals and Connie Knapp and Kelli Winkler added one apiece for the Rustlers (4-1-2, 8-3-2) in Huntington Beach.

In Orange Empire Conference volleyball action:

Orange Coast 3, Rancho Santiago 0--Kim Rochow had 36 assists, Karen Nickel 13 kills and Cindy Thomas 11 kills for the Pirates (2-0, 6-2). Melanine Schuler had nine kills for the Dons (1-1, 3-2).
