It wasn’t as though Canyon High’s win streak was ever in danger. But, despite the 35-3 final score, its game against Burroughs of Ridgecrest on Friday wasn’t exactly the mismatch it was supposed to be.

Canyon enjoyed only a 14-3 lead at the half over the the winless Burros (0-6-1).

“They sure didn’t look like an 0-5-1 winless team,” Canyon tackle Matt Byer said. “But every time we play someone, they throw their whole season at us.”

But, against Canyon (7-0), they rarely come out on top. The win was Canyon’s 45th straight and 22nd consecutive Golden League victory.

The Cowboys, ranked No. 1 in both The Times Valley and Southern Section Coastal Conference polls, took control of the game on their first possession of the second half.

Quarterback Ken Sollom hit four straight short passes to begin the half and led the Cowboys on an 80-yard scoring drive for a 21-3 lead. Running back Lance Cross capped the drive with a one-yard plunge.

“They had a lot of guys blitzing and so we were pretty successful with the short passes,” Sollom said. “It built a lot of confidence for me.”

Not that the senior quarterback ever really needed it.

He entered the game as the Valley’s leading passer and did little to hurt his numbers, completing 16 of 23 passes for 222 yards and 1 touchdown. On the season, he has connected on 89 of 150 attempts for 1,587 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Canyon, which improved to 2-0 in league, has outscored its opponents this season, 234-65.

Canyon limited the Burros to 165 yards in total offense. Canyon ended up gaining 388 yards, mostly in the second half.
