Southern Section Tennis : No. 2 Agoura Edges Woodbridge

The Woodbridge High School girls’ tennis team came close to upsetting second-seeded and undefeated Agoura in the Southern Section 3-A quarterfinals Tuesday at Agoura.

The Warriors tied Agoura in sets, 9-9, but lost on total games won, 75-61, and were eliminated.

Woodbridge was strong in doubles, winning six of nine sets, but the Warriors lost the match in singles competition, winning three of nine.

Julie Willett, Pacific Coast League singles champion, swept her matches as did the No. 3 doubles team of Shanna Mayerson and Lisa Wang.

In other 3-A matches:

Claremont 10, Laguna Hills 8--The Wolfpack took six of nine singles matches at Laguna Hills. Freshman Laxmi Poruri swept her singles matches to lead Claremont (20-1). Laguna Hills finished 19-1.

In 4-A matches:

Corona del Mar 14, Beverly Hills 4--Danielle Scott and Robin Bain swept their singles matches to lead the Sea Kings at Corona del Mar. The Sea Kings, Sea View League champions, will play defending champion Palos Verdes Thursday in a semifinal match.

In 2-A matches:

Valencia 11, Whittier 7--Diane Ewing and Tram-Anh Le swept their singles matches to lead the Tigers (20-2) at Whittier. Ewing, playing at No. 1 singles lost only one game in three matches.
