Sweetwater Wins to Advance to State Volleyball Tournament

LA JOLLA — Sweetwater High School defeated La Jolla, 17-15, 15-13, 16-14, to advance to the state girls’ volleyball tournament. Sweetwater, the CIF San Diego Section 3-A runner-up, will play at Mira Costa (19-0), the top-seeded team in the large school Division I bracket at 7:30 tonight.
Sweetwater (31-2) was led by the Taeatafa sisters. Karen led all players with 25 kills and Carolyn recorded 11. La Jolla (20-4), the section 2-A runner-up, was led by Amy Randel’s 17 kills and 7 blocks.
First-year Coach Ed Burke has led Sweetwater to the state playoffs for the first time. Sweetwater has never advanced past the first round of the section playoffs.
