Francis Parker 3, Flintridge Sacred Heart 0--Top-seeded Francis Parker began its quest toward the Division III title with a 15-4, 15-4, 15-5 home victory over Flintridge, an all-girls school in Pasadena.

“We want to win the state championship,” said Tracy Hughes, who was a freshman on Parker’s state runner-up team in 1983.

Francis Parker (29-2) will play Brentwood at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Francis Parker. The winner advances to the state finale Dec. 6 at Cal State Fullerton.

“Our goal was to win our section,” said Flintridge setter Julie Moscicki. “This is more like an honor to go to state. We had to get psyched up all over again.”

The Flintridge (19-3) team visited the San Diego Zoo Tuesday afternoon, while Parker Coach John Cook was planning strategy.

“We knew that 33 (Anna Lund) was the girl they try to go to,” Cook said. “We set our blocking and serving to take advantage of that.”

Lund, who was hitting mostly from the back row, had 8 of the team’s 11 kills and 10 hits that directly resulted in Parker points.

“We had her so worried about passing the ball that she never got on track,” Cook said.

Nor did Moscicki, whose sets were often low. She was called for six double-hit violations that resulted in Parker points.

“We’ve played a lot of bigger schools and we have to intimidate people,” said Hughes, whose 16 kills increased her school record total to 430. She also had five service aces.

“He (Cook) has instilled confidence in us that we can win,” Hugues said. “This year we have the best shot of any other year.”
