State High School Volleyball : Poway’s Victory Is a First, but Next Match May Be a Last

Poway High School became the first San Diego Section team to advance past the first round of the large schools bracket of the state girls’ volleyball tournament Tuesday night by beating Los Angeles Roosevelt, 16-14, 15-0, 15-4.

Although Poway, which had lost in the first round the past two years, was impressive Tuesday night, Coach Lisa Reis has doubts about winning the next match.

No. 4-seeded Poway (24-1) will play top-seeded Mira Costa (20-0) at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Manhattan Beach

“My goal was to get past the first round,” Reis said. “My goal Saturday is just to get a game off them. It would be extremely, extremely difficult to beat Mira Costa.”

The only difficulty Poway had against Roosevelt (13-4), the City Section 3-A champion, was in the first game.

Poway trailed, 14-13, before scoring three straight points to win. Roosevelt scored seven points on Titan errors in the first game. Behind its powerful serve, Poway scored 25 unanswered points over three games. The streak started with a kill by Lynell Stokes to make the score 14-14 in Game 1 and ended in the third game, with a service ace by Roosevelt’s Lupe Gomez, which cut the Titans’ lead to 7-1.

After serving just one ace in the first game, Poway ended the match with 17.

Sheri Boyer and Deanne Anastas led Poway with nine kills each and sophomore Carrie Poynter had six aces.
