Boys’ Basketball Roundup : Stark, Kostoff Help Lead Capo Valley Over Foothill

Randy Stark scored on a follow shot with two minutes remaining in overtime, and Todd Kostoff added a free throw with 10 seconds left to lead Capistrano Valley High School to a 60-57 overtime victory over Foothill in the nonleague season opener in the Knights’ gym.

The Cougars were trailing, 57-55, in regulation but tied the score when Don Collins made a jump shot from the left corner with four seconds to play. Capistrano Valley then went on to shut the Knights out in the three-minute overtime period.

Todd Marinovich led Cougar scorers with 16 points, Charles Lockard added 14 points, and Kostoff had 10. Greg Rieber scored a team-high 15 points and Doug Kopcha added 11 for Foothill.

In other nonleague games:

Santa Ana 72, Orange Lutheran 48--Jeff Stewart scored a game-high 28 points to lead the Saints to an easy victory over the Lancers at Orange Lutheran High. Point guard Scootie Lynwood added 18 points, and Mike Mitchell had 13 points to help Santa Ana victory its season opener. Jason Neben scored 18 points for the Lancers.

St. Margaret’s 83, Liberty Christian 44--Mark Campaigne scored 28 points, Mark Flather had 19 points, and Chris Cooper added 18 points as the Tartans rolled to an easy victory over the Minutemen in the season opener at Liberty Christian High School.

In Valencia Tournament action:

Westminster 59, Orange 51--Mark Austin and Chris Tower each scored 14 points to lead the Lions to the victory over the Panthers in a second-round game at at Valencia High School.

Chris Chaisson added 11 points for Westminster, which advances to Thursday night’s semifinals against Valencia. Jeff Smith led Panther scorers with 16 points, and Danny Adams and Rusty Olson added 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Mater Dei 70, Fontana 36--Senior center LeRon Ellis scored 19 points and junior forward Kevin Rembert added 18 to help the Monarchs defeat the Steelers. Mike Hopkins added 12 points for Mater Dei, which plays Lakewood in tonight’s semifinals.

Lakewood 68, Esperanza 47--Duane Cooper scored 24 points and Milton Robinson added 13 points to lead the Lancers past the Aztecs in a quarterfinal game. Ross Harvey scored 14 points and Mitch Vincent had 10 points for Esperanza (1-1).

In Garden Grove Tournament action:

Western 57, El Dorado 48--Wil Jefferson and Chris Bowen each scored 11 points to lead the Pioneers past the Golden Hawks in a first-round game at Garden Grove High School. Craig Shimahara and Joey Romero each added 10 points for Western, which outscored El Dorado, 16-7, in the first period. Charles Stevens led Golden Hawk scorers with 12 points.

Bolsa Grande 75, Fullerton 61--Nam Cao scored 11 of his game-high 23 points in the third quarter to lead the Matadors over the Indians. Bolsa Grande outscored Fullerton, 30-13, in the third quarter on the way to the victory. Thurman Brown added 18 points and Joe Small had 14 for the Matadors. Greg Wilber scored 15 points to lead Fullerton.

In Cerritos-Gahr Tournament action:

Gahr 59, Cypress 49--Shawn Jamison scored 20 points, Kevin Kent had 16 points, and Ike Withers added 10 points to help the Gladiators defeat the Centurions at Gahr High. Bond Weaver led Cypress with 12 points, and Matt Civitelli added 12.
