Orange County Boys’ Basketball Roundup : Smith Helps Orange Advance Past Savanna With a Basket at Buzzer

Jeff Smith scored on a 19-foot jump shot at the buzzer Tuesday night to lift Orange High School to a 41-40 victory over Savanna in the first round of the Sonora-Sunny Hills Tournament at Sonora High School.

The Rebels held a 40-39 lead with six seconds left, but Savanna’s Richard Kemple missed a free throw, and the Panthers got the rebound. Orange then quickly brought the ball up court and Smith shot the game-winner.

Smith and Khang Tran each scored 11 points for Orange, which advances to Thursday’s quarterfinals against Sonora. Mike Campbell scored a game-high 14 points for Savanna, which will play the Sunny Hills junior varsity team in the consolation quarterfinals.

In other Sonora-Sunny Hills Tournament action:

Sonora 65, Sunny Hills JV 42--Grayle Humphrey and David Morris each scored 18 points, and Kris Kramer added 12 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Raiders to an easy victory over the Lancers’ junior varsity at Sonora High. Jon Beuerlein led the Lancers with 12 points.

La Habra 63, Canyon 58--Alan Newman and Nelson Bergamo each scored 21 points to lead the Highlanders (1-2) to the victory over the Comanches at Sunny Hills High. David Jones led all scorers with 27 points for Canyon. La Habra will play Sunny Hills in Thursday’s second round.

Sunny Hills 63, Capistrano Valley JV 48--The Lancers defeated the Cougars’ junior varsity team to advance to the second round against La Habra.

In Santa Ana-Elks Tournament action:

Saddleback 64, Bolsa Grande 63--Galyn Dottin scored 19 points, and Sean Simon added 16 points to lead the Roadrunners to a first-round win over the Matadors at Santa Ana High. Frank Larriva scored 10 points for Saddleback (1-1), which will play Mission Viejo in Thursday’s semifinals.

Bolsa Grande (3-1) was led by Joe Small (18 points), Nam Cao (15) and Thurmond Brown (13).

Mission Viejo 70, Westminster 47--Five players scored in double figures for the Diablos, who were led by Todd Mathews’ 17 points and Jeff Herdman’s 16 points. Mission Viejo outscored the Lions, 25-11, in the fourth quarter to turn the game into a rout. Westminster’s Marlon Love led all scorers with 19 points.

In Fountain Valley Tournament action:

Fountain Valley 55, Cypress 53 (overtime)--Tom Weaver scored early in overtime, and Kevin Waite added a free throw with 34 seconds remaining to lift the Barons to a first-round victory over the Centurions at Fountain Valley High.

Waite led the Barons with 21 points, and Tom Rochlen added 16. Frantz Reyes scored a game-high 23 points for Cypress, and Matt Civitelli, whose jump shot at the buzzer tied the game at the end of the fourth period, added 10 points.

The Barons advance to Thursday’s semifinals against St. Anthony, a 66-65 winner over Millikan on Tuesday. Cypress plays Millikan in today’s consolation semifinals.

In La Quinta Tournament action:

La Quinta 71, West Torrance 57--Scott Campbell scored 19 points to lead the Aztecs to an easy first-round victory over the Warriors at La Quinta High. Brian Joe added 14 points for the Aztecs (3-1), Kenney Bennett had 12 points, Michael Whitcomb scored 10 points, and Arri Buford had 8 points and 14 rebounds. La Quinta will play El Modena in Thursday’s semifinals.

El Modena 71, Pacifica 50--Ramsey Rycraw scored 16 points to lead the Vanguards at La Quinta High. El Modena will play La Quinta in the semifinals.

In nonleague action:

University 80, La Mirada 40--Steve Stolzoff scored 17 points, and Lassie Glassen added 14 s to help the Trojans beat the Matadores at University High. Eric Olin added 12 points, 10 assists and 8 rebounds for the Trojans (4-0).

Corona del Mar 67, Dana Hills 48--Chris Hook scored 21 points, and Marcus Muller-Stach added 20 points to lead the Sea Kings past the Dolphins at Dana Hills High. Corona del Mar trailed, 26-25, at halftime but outscored Dana Hills, 21-7, in the third period to take control of the game.

Liberty Christian 68, Claremont 35--Four players scored in double figures for the Minutemen, who jumped out to a 26-6 lead in the first quarter and went on to an easy victory at Liberty Christian High. The Minutemen were led by Rick Hills (14 points), Tim Crouch (12), Fred Wheeler (11) and Dave Coopman (10). Tom Patraw scored a game-high 20 points for the Cougars.
