1986 ALL-STARS : SOUTH COAST

Times Staff Writer

The proof that you don’t have to be big to be an all-star was at Paramount High School this season.

“We were the smallest team on the field in just about every game,” Coach Ken Sutch said. “But we were quick and tough.”

The toughness, he said, came from long hours of weight training.

The Pirates won the San Gabriel Valley League championship by defeating Lynwood, 22-13. Lynwood had gone 35 games in the league without a loss.

Five Pirates made The Times’ All-South Coast team and only one of them weighs more than 200 pounds.

If you want bigger players, look at Millikan and Poly of the Moore League. Millikan has six players on the team, Poly has five.

The 23 first-team members will be honored at The Times’ Football Awards Brunch at 9 a.m. Sunday at the Anaheim Hilton Hotel. The featured speaker will be Arizona State Coach John Cooper.

Awards for back of the year, lineman of the year and coach of the year will be announced at the brunch. Those selections will be published Dec. 18.

The Times selects teams from 10 geographic zones in Southern California.

The following South Coast players were selected for The Times’ first team based on information supplied by coaches, college scouts and staff writers:

OFFENSE Quarterback--Kojuan Williams (Paramount, Sr.): “He made up for the mistakes I made,” Sutch said. Williams had 1,733 total yards, threw 20 touchdown passes and ran for 11 TDs. He led the Pirates to the playoffs three straight seasons.

Receiver--Rhett Nichol (Brethren, Sr.): Nichol used his great hands and his ability to run good patterns to catch 48 passes for 765 yards and 12 touchdowns. A former Brethren ball boy, he was team captain and made the All-Olympic League team. He has a 4.0 grade-point average.

Receiver--Rico Smith (Paramount, Sr.): He came through with the big plays for the Pirates. He averaged 19 yards a catch and scored nine touchdowns. His speed made him a threat to break a TD from anywhere on the field.

Back--Leonard Russell (Poly, Sr.): “He’s the best back in the (Moore) league and one of best in CIF,” Poly co-head Coach Jerry Jaso said. Although every team keyed on him, “Eight Ball” gained 1,236 yards in 194 carries. A repeater on the All-South Coast team, Russell displayed more leadership this season.

Back--Anthony Green (Dominguez, Sr.): “Our whole offense,” said Dominguez Coach Willie Donerson of Green, who carried the ball more than 200 times for 1,400 yards. A power-type runner, Green “keeps going and going and going,” Donerson said.

Back--Marvin Montgomery (Jordan, Sr.): An explosive runner, Montgomery darted and dashed for more than 1,300 yards. He also caught 20 passes. He threw passes too, completing six of nine, one for a touchdown.

Line--Jason Dallas (Poly, Sr.): Dallas is so aggressive, Jaso said, that he almost has a defensive player’s personality. At 6 feet 5 and 215 pounds, he is rangy and quick. An excellent pulling guard and pass blocker.

Line--Craig Baker (Millikan, Sr.): Millikan Coach Dave Radford said Baker is the epitome of a high school center--”there is none finer.” Baker, who did everything on the field and in the classroom at a high level, is a candidate for the Military Academy at West Point. He is a repeater on the All-South Coast team.

Line--Pat Smith (Millikan, Jr.): Smith and Baker were the reasons that Raoul Spears gained 1,200 yards for the Rams. Smith, a 5-10, 200-pound guard, is also an excellent student.

Line--Garrett Spencer (Paramount, Sr.): An All-San Gabriel Valley League tight end for the second straight year, Spencer was a great blocker and a dependable receiver.

Line--Gerardo Avila (Paramount, Sr.): Avila was an excellent pulling guard and an aggressive, vicious hitter who also played linebacker.

All-Purpose--Bob Crane (Millikan, Jr.): A good all-around player, Crane played quarterback, tight end and defensive end and played all of those positions at a starter’s level.

DEFENSE Line--Danianke Smith (Poly, Jr.): The factors that make Smith a star include tremendous quickness and great lateral movement, instincts and leg strength. The junior is an outstanding pass rusher.

Line--Ron Singleton (Millikan, Sr.): “I wish I could coach guys like him the rest of my life,” Radford said of Singleton. “He really cares.” Singleton played tackle with speed, agility and toughness.

Line--Colin Boyd (Millikan, Sr.): Boyd, Radford said, could win most dance contests with his great feet. A 6-2, 235-pound end, Boyd had the ability to keep runners from getting around him.

Line--Bruce Roos (Artesia, Sr.): The offensive and defensive lineman of the year in the Suburban League, this 6-foot-5, 222-pound tackle is quick and strong. He is being recruited by Pac-10 teams.

Linebacker--Mark Odom (Poly, Sr.): “He was super for us,” Jaso said of this three-year starter. Extremely fast for a linebacker, Odom runs the 40 in 4.6 seconds. A very intelligent player, he could defend the run as well as the pass.

Linebacker--Marvin Hunt (Dominguez, Jr.): Despite his size--5-7, 160--Hunt is a tremendous defensive player who helped spark the resurgence in Dominguez football. An excellent tackler, he has a knack for knowing where the ball is.

Linebacker--Raoul Spears (Millikan, Sr.): “His thighs are like columns in the Supreme Court,” Radford said of the 6-2, 235-pound Spears. The team captain, Spears gained 1,200 yards as a fullback. When he was on defense, nobody ran at him.

Linebacker--Jaime Fields (Lynwood, Jr.): With 130, Fields had twice as many tackles as any other Lynwood player. A strong athlete who played football for the first time, Fields could get through traffic to the ball carrier. He is a major-college prospect, Lynwood Coach Larry Anderson said.

Back--Eugene Burkhalter (Poly, Sr.): His presence made opponents forget about throwing the ball down the middle. Burkhalter, on the All-South Coast team for the second straight year, is an excellent tackler whom Jaso expects to be an excellent college player.

Back--Charlie Williams (Millikan, Sr.): Millikan always counted on Williams to make something happen, and he did. Blessed with speed, strength and intelligence, Williams had six interceptions and was a devastating tackler.

Back--Benny Compian (Paramount, Sr.): A two-year starter, Compian had the hard-hitting, physical style of a linebacker, although he’s only 5 feet 9 and 160 pounds.

Second team offensive selections were:

Wide receivers--Allen Trent (Mayfair) and Alan Aragon (St. Anthony); Backs--Darrell Thompson (Cerritos), Austin McCowan (Lynwood) and Victor Matos (Artesia); Linemen--Don Beard (Lynwood), Melvin Johnson (Lynwood), James Miller (Paramount), Ron Scranton (Cerritos) and Steve Stigler (Mayfair); Quarterback--Derek Stott (Brethren); All-Purpose--Juan Trujillo (Jordan).

Second team defensive selections included:

Linemen--Emmanuel Onwutuebe (Lynwood), George Collier (Poly), Corlis Jones (Dominguez) and Simon Vaoifi (Jordan); Linebackers--Ron Sisk (Brethren), Martin Hammonds (Artesia), Pat Olson (Mayfair) and Chris Clark (Jordan); Backs--Lolo James (Poly), Efrum Thomas (Jordan) and Ray Jones (Millikan.
