Sonora-Sunny Hills Tournament : Woodbridge Picks Its Shots, 60-50

Share

Woodbridge High School came out in the second half playing the way Coach Bill Shannon wanted them to and the Warriors gave their coach a 60-50 victory over Katella in the championship game of the Sonora-Sunny Hills Classic Saturday night.

The only reason the Warriors had held a 27-20 halftime lead was due to the poor shooting on the part of Katella (10 of 29).

“I emphasized good shot selection at halftime and we came out taking better shots in the second half,” Shannon said.

Katella, despite its poor shooting, remained close until the middle of the third quarter when Woodbridge went on a 14-3 run to take a 45-30 lead with less than a minute left in the quarter.

Adam Keefe, who was named the tournament’s most valuable player, scored six of his game-high 17 points during the pivotal run. The 6-foot 7-inch junior made a spectacular reverse dunk, which started the run, after the Warriors had broken the Knights’ fullcourt press. Keefe had not practiced before the tournament because of a sprained ankle, but that didn’t seem to slow him down.

Katella’s center Richard Lucas scored 17 points but had trouble penetrating the Woodbridge defense, which often triple-teamed the 6-7 senior.

“Our defense played extremely well tonight,” Shannon said. “We forced them into taking poor shots and forced a few turnovers.”

Woodbridge improved to 4-0 while Katella, which had won the Laguna Beach Tournament, is 7-1.

In the third-place game, Sunny Hills beat Sonora, 69-61, as David Chisum scored 20 points and had 20 rebounds for the Lancers.
