Irvine World News Tournament : Joyce Scores 24 to Lead Santa Ana

Bobby Joyce scored 24 points and had 20 rebounds to lead Santa Ana High School to a 63-55 victory over Laguna Hills in a first round Irvine World News Tournament game Monday at Irvine High School.

Only last Saturday, Joyce, a 6-foot, 6-inch center, was starting at safety for the Saints’ football team in the Southern Section Southern Conference final.

Jeff Stewart added 17 points and 6 rebounds for the Saints. Santa Ana is 4-2. Laguna Hills fell to 1-5.

In other first-round tournament games:

Edison 66, Santa Ana JV 49--Scott DeStefano scored 20 points to lead the Chargers at Irvine. El Toro trailed by a point at halftime, but outscored the Saints, 23-8, in the third quarter. Oscar Wilson, a 6-3 freshman, led Santa Ana with 19 points.

Los Amigos 61, Paramount 52--Gene Altamirano scored 26 points to lead the Lobos at Irvine. Los Amigos rallied from a 26-25 halftime deficit. Jeff Jackson scored 14 points to lead Paramount. Los Amigos is 3-1.

Foothill 75, Western 62--Greg Rieber’s 22 points and 10 rebounds led the Knights at University. Rusty VanCleve added 18 for Foothill and Chris Aquevequez had 15 assists. Chuck Powell led Western with 22.

Marina 58, Troy 53--Steve Guild scored all 12 of his points in the fourth quarter to lead the Vikings at Woodbridge. Marina’s Mark Georgeson led all scorers with 19 points. Mark Rudometkin led Troy (3-3) with 14. Marina raised its record to 6-0.

Corona del Mar 78, Rancho Alamitos 70--Marcus Muller-Stach, a 6-4 senior forward, scored 34 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Sea Kings at UC Irvine. Kevin O’Neil added 6 points and 11 rebounds for the Sea Kings. Corona del Mar is 6-1.

University 96, Santiago 63--Steve Stolzoff scored 22 points and Lasse Glassen added 17 to lead the Trojans at University (6-0).

Mission Viejo 70, Norco 51--Jeff Herdman scored 20 points and Todd Matthews added 19 points to lead the Diablos at UC Irvine.

Don Lugo 64, Estancia 54--David Chaney scored 21 points and Randy Thompson added 17 for the Conquistadors at Woodbridge. Brian Tift had 21 for Estancia.

Woodbridge 57, Savanna 41--Woodbridge outscored Savanna, 19-6, in the third quarter. Adam Keefe’s 22 points and 12 rebounds led the Warriors at Woodbridge. Mike Campbell scored 20 for Savanna.

Artesia 61, Garey 47--Tony Farmer scored 21 and Dominique Street added 15 for Artesia at University. Chris Austin led Garey with 14.

El Toro 82, Costa Mesa 69--Bret Johnson, quarterback of the Southern Conference champion El Toro football team, scored 20 points to lead the Chargers at University.

Long Beach Wilson 53, Saddleback 46--Randy West scored 17 points to lead the Bruins to the win.

In the Glendora Tournament:

Brea-Olinda 64, South Gate 50--Gary Chiotti scored 17 points and had 8 assists and Mike Thorum added 12 points and 9 rebounds to lead the Wildcats in this first round game. Brea-Olinda (3-3) meets Lynwood in a second-round game Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

In the Savanna girls’ tournament:

University 35, Troy 29--The Trojans defeated the Warriors in this consolation-bracket second round game.

In nonleague girls’ games:

Laguna Beach 47, Newport Harbor 34--Felecia Chalmers scored 22 points to lead the Artists (2-2) at Newport Harbor. Shannon Lane and Maurice Shannon added nine. Sarah Andrus scored 11 for Newport Harbor.

San Clemente 48, Oceanside 33--Lynne Kristofferson scored 17 points to lead the Tritons (4-1) at San Clemente.

Western 43, Villa Park 42 (OT)--The Pioneers edged the Spartans in overtime.
