San Diego High School Basketball : Oceanside Wins in Triple OT

Sai Niu hit an 18-foot jump shot at the buzzer to give Oceanside a 45-43 tripe-overtime victory over Torrey Pines in a semifinal game of the Lt. Mitchell Memorial Tournament at San Dieguito.

Oceanside effectively used a slow-down game against a Torrey Pines (8-1) team that was averaging 76 points. Oceanside (3-5) earned its third straight victory since the return of several starters who played football for the San Diego Section 2-A runner-up.

Oceanside led, 13-12, after the first quarter and then held the ball to take a 17-14 halftime lead. The score was tied, 31-31, after regulation, 37-37 after the first overtime and 41-41 after the second overtime.

Niu led all scorers with 14 points. Darrell Noble scored 13 and Junior Seau added 11 for Oceanside. Sophomore Kevin Flannigan scored 13 points and had 12 rebounds to pace Torrey Pines.

Edmond Johnson scored 26 points to lead El Camino to a 68-51 victory over San Marcos in the other semifinal. Lee Cobb added 14 points for El Camino (7-1). El Camino plays Oceanside for the tournament title tonight at 8:15.

MITCHELL TOURNAMENT

Fallbrook 54, San Clemente 51 (OT)--Doug Witkop scored on a layin and then made two free throws in overtime as Fallbrook reached the consolation championship game. Fallbrook trailed, 51-50, before Witkop scored the game’s final four points. Mark Ringkamp led Fallbrook with 18 points and Witkop added 12. Mike Peters led San Clemente with 16.

Yuma 52, San Dieguito 44--Ted Johnston scored 20 points to lead Yuma in a consolation game. Chris Bahr had 16 and Jack Minger had 12 for San Dieguito.

Las Vegas 67, Newport Harbor 62 (2 OT)--Eric White scored a key three-point play in the second overtime period to lead Las Vegas. With the score tied, 62-62, White finished with 19 points.

El Centro 50, Orange Glen 49 (OT)--Thomas Bigsby connected on a 15-foot jumper at the buzzer to give El Centro the consolation-round win. Moments before Bigsby’s winning shot, Wayne Ortega had put Orange Glen ahead, 49-48, with an 18-footer. Ralph Bellemy led El Centro with 16 points. Matt Fiorello and Steve Clinger led Orange Glen with 12 each.

KIWANIS TOURNAMENT

La Jolla 58, Serra 40--La Jolla outscored Serra 23-9 in the second quarter for the victory at Serra. Sophomore guard David Berteaux was 5 of 5 from the field in the second quarter and led all scorers with 18 points for La Jolla. Todd Knight paced Serra (1-5) with 15 points.

USDHS 62, Grossmont 41--University of San Diego High (1-3) broke open a close game in the second half, scoring more points in the third quarter (19) than Grossmont did in the entire second half (17). Tom Almand led Grossmont (3-4) with 13 points.

Helix 52, Bonita Vista 47--Helix won the game at the foul line, making 24 of 31 free throws while Bonita Vista hit 1 of just 4 free throws at Serra. John Pressler scored 13 points and Tim Zeddies added 10 to lead Helix. Randy Burk scored 14 points to pace Bonita Vista (1-4).

Hoover 64, El Capitan 47--Michael Walker scored 21 points and Tyrone Bell added 20 to lead Hoover (2-7) at Hoover High. The Cardinals trailed 28-25 at halftime but took control in the third quarter by outscoring El Capitan, 19-5. Danny Curtis and Eric Farley scored 11 points each for El Capitan.

Point Loma 60, Granite Hills 50--Point Loma’s Arlando Hill scored 23 points to lead Point Loma. John Tenney scored 20 points to lead Granite Hills (3-5).

Los Alamitos 59, Valhalla 58--Troy Toolson missed a desperation shot from 22 feet as Valhalla (5-2) fell short. Toolson and Charlie Foley led Valhalla with 16 points each.
