Estancia High School beat Sonora, 68-42, in the first round of the Estancia Tournament in Costa Mesa Friday night.

That wasn’t much of a surprise, unless you consider that the Eagles were playing without one of their best players, 6-foot 4-inch forward Matt Allen, whom Coach Joe Reid kicked off the team in a disciplinary action last week.

The Eagles (4-5) had lost two straight games since Allen’s dismissal but came back in style, picking Sonora apart with precision shooting and good defense.

“We gained a lot of confidence knowing we can win without him (Allen),” Reid said. “We’ve had some bad luck lately; hopefully this will carry over.”

Estancia didn’t look like a team lacking a top player Friday as a balanced offensive attack put the Raiders away in the first quarter. The Eagles outscored Sonora, 11-2, over the final five minutes to take a 17-6 first-quarter lead.

To make matters worse for the Raiders (4-5), their long-range specialist, David Morris, didn’t make his first jump shot until 3:28 remained in the first half. By then, Sonora was behind, 21-8.

Forward Brian Tift led the Eagles with 20 points, and Kyle Mooney had 13. Center Steve Barkley scored 12 points.
