SCC Defeats Azusa Pacific for 5th Straight

Rob Lucas scored 21 points, Randy Wynn had 20 and John Haar added 19 Monday night as Southern California College got its fifth straight victory by defeating Azusa Pacific, 87-74, in the Golden State Athletic Conference opener for both teams at Costa Mesa.

SCC (9-3) started slowly, trailing Azusa Pacific, 10-2 and then 23-10 at the 10-minute mark of the first half.

But the Vanguards, behind the shooting of Haar, rebounded and gained a 46-40 halftime lead.

Haar missed his first five shots but finished the game making 10 of 16.

“We thought we were mentally ready to play,” said Bill Reynolds, SCC coach. “We were just ice cold. We were only getting one shot at the beginning.”

But in the second half Southern California shot well to hold off Azsua Pacific (4-12), which dropped its fifth straight.

Jeff Stephens, a former Orange Coast College and Edison High player, added 16 points and 9 assists for SCC.

Danny Scott led Azusa Pacific with 22.

SCC made 35 of 57 field-goal attempts, including 16 of 26 in the second half. Point guard Todd Dixon had eight assists and four steals.
