San Fernando Protests 1-Point Loss to Birmingham
San Fernando High has filed a protest with the City Section office over a first-quarter play in Friday’s 65-64 loss to Birmingham.
With three minutes left in the first quarter and San Fernando leading, 10-1, Ennerea Maxwell of Birmingham missed the front end of a one-and-one. Shelton Boykin of San Fernando fielded the rebound but was called for goaltending.
Birmingham was awarded two points and the ball out of bounds, then scored to cut the deficit to 10-5. San Fernando Coach Dick Crowell believes game officials misinterpreted the rules and contends Maxwell should have been awarded only one point and a second free throw attempt.
Crowell said he has asked that the game be replayed from the point of the free throw or that three points be taken away from Birmingham, which would give San Fernando the victory.
