Corona del Mar High School should have easily won Friday night’s Sea View League game against University at Irvine.

As it was, the Sea Kings finally did win, beating University, 70-68, in overtime on a shot by Carl Amacker as time ran out.

But leading up to Amacker’s game-winner, his only score of the game, was a bit much for Corona del Mar (2-2, 15-6).

The Sea Kings’ troubles started when guard Chris Hook tried to put the game away in regulation with a powerful dunk late in the fourth quarter with CdM leading 60-57.

Hook missed the dunk, his second consecutive missed slam, and appeared to be fouled, but no whistles sounded.

Paul Orris, CdM coach, ran onto the court to check on Hook, who was shaken up on the play. Then Orris was charged with a technical foul after a heated discussion with officials. Darren Morris, who was fouled trying to follow the missed dunk, made one of two free throws.

After Eric Olin converted both technical shots, the Trojans (2-2, 13-6) trailed 61-59 and had possession with 3:16 left. Two and a half minutes later, the Trojans took the lead, 64-62, on two Lasse Glassen free throws and a foul shot by the Trojans’ Steve Stolzoff.

When Morris traveled after stealing a Trojan inbounds pass with three seconds left, the Sea Kings appeared to have blown the game.

But Morris stole the inbounds pass again and was fouled by Eric Caldwell as he tried to shoot a desperation 50-footer. Morris made both free throws to send the game into overtime.

Morris also led the Sea Kings in the overtime. Morris failed to hear Orris’ pleas to call a timeout, and instead passed to an open Amacker underneath the basket for the winning shot.

Markus Muller-Stach scored 24 for the Sea Kings, and Chris Burns added 20, 14 in the second period. Glassen and Eric Olin had 16 each for the Trojans.

Estancia 54, Saddleback 51--Brian Tift scored 18 points scored 18 points to lead the Eagles (10-8, 4-0) over the Roadrunners (5-10, 1-3) at Estancia. Danny Ontiveros led Saddleback 14 points.
